Ok ... Dunce-o-matic strikes again

Featured Replies

Guess who ... erm it's me ;)

Ok first question ... read somewhere in passing about dimming of headlights when engine is revved, can't for the life of me remember where ... think it was with reference to the alternator/battery ?? ... Well i need to narrow it down as Clutterbuck is playing tricks again (has to be a male car :D). When parked the idle was rather low and when revved headlights dimmmed then brightened (dimmed for a second at most).

I think i read somewhere this was a battery contact/corrosion problem ... does this ring a bell ??

Actually got my hands mucky under the bonnet the other day and not an artfully placed smear of grease ;)

Lord i LOVE haynes ... it's already plastered with paper clips and post-it notes.

Question two ... Starter motor is "dry" ??? and Drive chain is making the noise. Which would you do first ? I figure the starter as nothing gonna work if that goes ... appreciate your thoughts though.

Swedish ... Congrats on minor MOT points ... love that saying "Ship Shape and Bristol Fashion" .. me being a Bristolian and all

Hi :wave23d:

Wonder if it was any of these threads you were after?

Chain or starter - IIRC there was an almost unanimous opinion that you could leave both till later. If I had to choose one I would probably do the starter first as I'm a firm believer in Sod's law. We got a new starter n SWMBO's Octavia before taking off to her parents at Christmas 2006 because otherwise it would of course have broken down somewhere en route on a cold an dark December night when all garages were closed for Christmas.

On the other hand, Sod's law will also say that if you spend all your money on a new starter the chain will break the week after :rubchin:

Yes, I'm pretty satisfied with the MOT, will have a new ball joint put in place next week.

I'd do the starter first, because a timing chains breaking is almost unheard of.

Headlights dimming when the engine is revved suggests an alternator problem.
