Sachs uprated (competition) clutch

Featured Replies

Firstly "Hello briskoa."

I'm new to the site, i've been viewing it for 2 weeks since i've owned my Fabia. Top site, looks very helpful .

So...... here goes.

I've bought a Fabia VRS (2003, 40k) re-mapped from 9 months old from my uncle. I know the cars history very well and know its definately not been driven hard.

Typically after two weeks of owning the car the clutch has JUST started to slip:( Gutted!

(In 4th the revs reach 3k, drop to 2.7 then reach 3 again)

But, love the car to bits, very pleased so am more than willing to pay the price of a new clutch.

£255 ish fitted inc. VAT from Mr Clutch

or

A Sachs uprated (competition) clutch £715 from Jabba Sport.

I don't want to replace the clutch with another standard due to the risk of wear again in another 40k as it would more than likely be just as i'm selling the car.

 So is £715 a typical price to pay for a fitted Sachs?

 Are there any other uprated clutches good for everyday to and from work?

Thanks to anyone for any further advice....... :)

Hi and welcome to the site,

Have a read of my thread http://www.briskoda.net/forums/fabia/diy-clutch-fit-extras/95037/

I have recentley done a clutch swap on my vrs.

The sach clutch is really good, it bites like oem without the slip.

The only problem with the sach is that it retains the oem Dual Mass Flywheel which are prone to failure. I had to replace mine at a cost of £200 on top of the 450+vat for the clutch.

So its a good idea to buget for a new DMF.

If Doing it again i would definatley look twards the helix or spec clutch with the SMF, as i still get a little vibration from the DMF under heavey booting.

Thanks for the reply, had a look at your thread and "WHAT THE ****!" I was gonna consider fitting it myself, jeeeez no way. Looks like a hell of a job haha well done.

I have read a few posts about the Helix clutch and yeah it sounds like a great durable and robust piece of kit but has a harsh biting point? Not ideal for traffic and sometimes 'chatters' at idle? but you mention.... "or 'spec' clutch" just wondered what that is?

 I really know nothing about this so thankyou for the previous reply.

But with regards to the fly-wheel, I'm guessin a Sachs clutch with stronger springs would grab and grip far better so put far less wear on the fly-wheel then a standard clutch?

And since realising its slipping i'm driving it like Miss Daisy taking care not to put any further wear on anything. So do you think I should definately change the fly-wheel or just maybe?

Cheers.

Cheers, it looks worse than it actually was ;) the standard clutch was really fried on mine :o Hence why the flywheel was in such bad shape. Took me about two weeks to do, but i only spent about 4 hours in total on the car.

At First i thought Wooow what i have done, the biting on the sach was quite visious, but with a few thousand miles under her belt its the best thing I have done on the car yet. The peddle bites higher up than standard so theres less room for mistakes, but once you have stalled it a couple times you tend to get used to it. The best thing is changing gear, its immense, it really does bite

The spec clutch comes from the USA, its very similar to to the helix one. I know only of two people on this forum with the spec clutch. Devonutopia (jason) and Oilburningnut (gary) Both have this clutch.

The helix one is more money than the spec one but its a UK supplied product so its easier to get hold of.

The chatter is one thing that put me off buying a SMF but after reading more and more positive reviews its something i would consider in the future.

Nope the sach clutch plate has no springs in it, its a solid plate. Its not the flywheel wearing thats the problem, it consists of two plates with a fluid between. You can only really tell once the old clutch is off. any excess rotational movement, micro cracking or blueing and the flywheel should be replaced....... Mine had all 3 of these problems

From the first point it started slipping (on awesomes rollers) to it destroying itself i covered 5000 miles of constant abuse. so i wouldnt worry too much

I run a Helix clutch and the biting point isnt that harsh, is very easily managable in 30mph zones and traffic

It does chatter at idle however but for the performance gains it doesnt really bother me

On the move its absolutely ace, gear changes are so much sharper and you can feel it 'bite' if giving it the beans, is an amazing piece of kit. I have also noticed it picks up the revs quicker when changing gear, rather than waiting for the revs to kick back in.

Cheapest place i could source it was from Mardigras motorsport , they have an internet site, was £840 delivered to my door.

Im happy :)
