Featured Replies

Morning all!!

Went to asda this morning in the snow!!

reversed off the drive then put car into 1st, as i pulled off my furby began to wheel spin and my little ASR icon was flashing on the dash board...as soon as i put my foot on the footbreake it felt like agrinding behind the pedal/ into the engine bay....after taking my foot off the pedal and trying it again it was fine?

has anyone else had this problem or if not would anyone be able to let me know what happened lol?

many thanks as always

Adam

was it icy?

if so it could be the cause as the abs seems to have kicked in

any one close by that could give you a check over with vagcom ?

edit just read it was in the snow:dopey:

in snow your wheels would have been spining

when you braked you locked the brakes up and the abs did what its ment to do

you just need to learn to drive a bit slower in the snow :P :D

The grinding will nearly 100% be the ABS kicking in.

It feels weird if your not used to it...

wierd aint the word lol...felt like my brakes were grinding to destruction lol

thanks for the answers :)

Yeah thats ABS mate.

The ASR wont stop wheel spin altogether it just helps to minimise it. If there was a problem then the light would come on and stop on. If it is flashing when spin occurs then in is ok. All it does is uses the ABS sensors to detect spin of the wheels and cuts engine power to control it. If you pressed the brake and you felt a slight vibration of the pedal during ice and snow then that is the ABS pump kicking in attempting to unlock the locked up wheels and then applying pressure again once it detects that the wheel is moving again.

IMO everyone should get know what their ABS feels like as a matter of course.

Alot of people simply panic and take their foot off the brake pedal when the ABS is felt for the first time during an emergency stop - which ofcourse is usually the wrong thing to do.

For many reasons some people are really scared of practising an emergency stop - like something awful is going to happen. It took me ages to persuade my daughter to "get to know her car" in this way.

Thats how I know the Fabia VRS brakes go soft quite quickly and prompted me to upgrade to 312mm.

Very true Jules....

And a good expination there BUZZ!

indeed, when I'm teaching emergancy stops, I make sure they know all about ABS , ESP, ASR ect ect, and up my way the driving examiners like to make people do the emergancy stop on 60 mph roads!
