flat spots with performance filter

Featured Replies

Ive noticed on hard accelerating that there seems to be a huge flat spot between 4&5K rpm especially in 2 and 3rd. it also seems to to hesitate on the runway at 100. before eventually moving up the speed range (or running out of runway).

Im thinking of putting the standard filter back in, will i need to adjust the car for this or will the ecu learn and set itself back to how it was before i got a performance filter???

Also the engine is much noiser, not in air intake but it sounds quite rough since the performance filter was added. any ideas?

Put the standard air cleaner back. You don't get as much performance from the "sports" filters to make up for the reduction in engine life.

You should check to see if your oil is significantly dirtier than before and perhaps change it.

Will do but will i need to reset the throttle and all the other things makefish mentioned before or will the ecu do this over time?

It will learn everything back on it's own in a few hundred miles. If you want to speed things up just disconnect the battery for a minute, then take it for a drive, so it can adapt back.

Be warned that trip computers etc get reset.

Won't hurt to reset the ECU, but it will learn.

I just change paper ones every 10k. Yes it costs more over 60k miles (eg £10 per time as opposed to £50 1 off) but then they filter better :)

Once you're outside of warrenty a MANN filter is only £5 and exactly the same part number as is printedo n the VW one

Out here they only use Mann filters on all German (ish) cars outside warranty with no problems whatsoever.

My ex mk4 Golf used only Mann for 120k km, and I know cars over 200k that use them with no problems. Can't advise against them. Do you also have Champion or Bosch available? Or Valeo?

Mann, Fram etc are fine over here.

The VAG ones are Mann items, but warrenty etc etc ;)

Seen your previous posts on this subject; I wonder if you have a rouge filter. Isn't it a Green Cotton?

IMHO, for now, put your OEM filter back no need to do anything else; just let the ECU settle down over the next 250- 400 miles. Check that you have all fittings connections in the correct place.

Engine noise? Check that the engine cover (in two sections perhaps) has not popped out of its rubber bung locations and is vibrating; you might have nudged it sometime, although mine would pop out for not reason until I secured it with cable ties!

Put the old original filter back on, engine sounds happier and fuel consumption has improved. On top of this there isnt the flat spot that was between 4-5k. personally i dont think the panel filter is much cop even if its a green cotton one, so anyone wants one for a reduced price then give me a shout. For the time being i will keep with the paper ones which seem to do a better job!!.

Strongly believe you have got a rogue filter! Speak to your supplier and see if they'll replace/refund it.

There is nothing inherently wrong with having a replacement panel filter.

All the same; go and talk to them!

ill email them later as they aint around the corner from me and a round trip to them would cost me the same in fuel as it does for the filter.
