Sweet mother of...! (Car running costs)

Featured Replies

I had a look in the glasses guide (admittedly, an old one - 2005) and compared the prices between a '04 vrs that has done 20,000 miles and an '04 vrs that has done 30,000 miles and it worked out to 5pence per mile...

Makes sense to me - I worked my costs out from that link and mine comes in at around 18p a mile which isn't too bad at all :D

Chris

As for the averaging 50mpg

As for the averaging 50mpg

Why's that funny? Over the last 3000 miles I've averaged well over 50MPG (And that's calculated using the brim-to-brim method)

Running about in a 20 year old BMW 320i seems to be the key for me!

Welshy's been hacking other people's accounts again! ;)

(Although he's obviously downgraded his expectations - I thought his used purchase of choice was a 5 series! :D )

Stop it right now

I do 60k a year use up over £5k just on fuel I DONT want to think about it that way it doesnt hurt as much

Works out at 25 p per mile for me, on 5000 miles a year. Spent £26 on servicing last year, MOT cost me nothing and if the government hadn't stopped the rolling 25 year road tax exemption that would have been free. Depreciation it's had all that and is now appreciating. Theres alot to be said for running a simple old car.

Lol! unfortunately not, I am another Bavarian Deviant:thumbup::rofl:

Yeah, interest on any finance/lost revenue on capital is a valid point - but surely, assuming you MUST run a car, then thats pretty constant based on what you paid unless you got a shocking deal on finance... More like 1.5p/mile based on loss of interest on a £5k spend...

Tom as stated before the Passat 130 TDI SE/Sport or SE with sport alloys makes a hell of a lot of sense buy at £4k+ and run it for 4-5 years = peanuts to run loads of space and so much more kit than the opposition at that price & who cares about buying a car with 120,000 on the clock? Young drivers lol

I have stopped driving to the office because of fuel cost. Running cost beyond fuel excluded, I am spending 300+ quid a month on fuel alone... And thus I stopped driving to the office...

Tyres every 10k on the front on average, probably 30-40k on the rears. Service every 10k, not great...

And people say public transport is expensive...

:sofahide:

PS I've just bought a bike and am probably going to SORN my fabia next year when I don't need it for a year (living in a city), so you might as well ban me now

Why not just sell it?

I looked on a web site about a year back dealing with cost per mile and it worked out 50p per mile for the Octy VRS.

Can't remember where (old age) but it will have gone up a bit since then!

Why not just sell it?

Because:

a) I'm going to run it 'till it dies, so not bothered about depreciation

B) I'll probably need it the year after as my work will be out of town

Are these valid reasons, or you reckon it'd still be better to sell?

Sorry for the thread hijack

Is it going to work out cheaper to SORN for a year and then put the car back on the road, or sell now and buy a new car in a year's time? I'm guessing it's going to be cheaper to SORN but I could be wrong....

Chris

Surely taking the vehicle off the road for anything more than say two-three weeks is actually going to degrade it in some ways, e.g. battery will start to drain?

When I fractured my ankle I had to be off work but still turned the engine over in the driveway at the weekends. Over the course of a year that's not going to suffice. You'll need to get the oil changed as a necessity I guess.

And have you seen the prices of batteries in the last six months!!??
