Sheered bolt on ABD TiP & Wheel Alignment by Phil

Featured Replies

Thought with the new 18's i ought to have the tracking checked so off to Merityre in Thame this morning.

Cheers Phil (piv34uk)

Easily found and they had the car straight in :D

Took the S3 lower strut brace with me to do while the car was up on the ramps, but as Phil checked the car over he noticed the 5mm allen bolt from the TiP is missing.

He tried to fit another and then a smaller one, but seems like the previous one has sheered off!

It's only been on about 2months max! Fitted by Impossible Performance.

Has anyone else had/heard of this?

It must only be held on now by the O-ring seal

Next got the S3 brace fitted, nice and easy, 2min job :)

Then more bad news when he also managed to find a rather nasty looking hole in one of the Michelin Pilot Sports so 2 were changed for Pirelli P-Zero Rossos. A rather unwelcome cost, but as it's keeping the car to the road a well worth one!

Once again, cheers Phil

:D Nice to have met you Simon, i am glad you were happy with the tracking results.........:o sorry to have pointed out the sheered bolt in the TIP and the rather nasty piece of exposed canvass in your tyres:rolleyes:

 Your wheels look even better now they have quality tyres on.........

 After driving your car and Andy`s (wilsonian) both Jabba chipped i think my mind is nearly made up to say sod the warranty and go for it:eek:

;) Hope to see you again when your fronts wear out

Phil

Yep i think almost everyone who had one of the ABD LAN kits has lost that bolt - it's due to the engine movement. If you had a small piece of rubber between the bracket and the side of the engine bay it might have given it a bit of play.

Some peeps have fitted a new bolt or bolt-on-a-plate (http://www.bighead.co.uk/ courtesy of ChrisH) or as I never actually get round to doing any of these things i have simply shortened the length between the pipe + the MAF housing by losening on of the jubilee clips on the rubber sleeve and sliding the pipe towards the MAF housing. Has worked perfectly for several 000 miles now + doesn't rattle about like you might expect.

I never lost that bolt :D

I think simon is talking about the bolt that attaches the turbo pipe to the turbo, if its sheared off and you cant get the old one out then get the samco pipe. This attaches using a P clip as its a rubber hose.

I look forward to you PMing me then. ;)

Latest remap GB about to "take off" and I have spaces.

Dave, Jon, Mannys right, it's the TiP bolt thats sheared, not the LAN pipe bolt.

Think a phone call to Impossible is in order...

Hmmm group buy on the Samco version?

it's the TiP bolt thats sheared

??? ???

There is no TIP bolt........unless you're talking about the bit with hole in, which bolts the TIP down??

5mm bolt should be the one used fo rthe standard TIP.

:dunce: I'll get me coat.

Thats the one, the little bit that bolts into the turbo!

Sorry Si...I'm semi-awake from baby duties....

...bolt sheared or the bit which the bolt goes through on TIP broken off?

IMHO,

The bolt can only be sheared by over-tightening, there should be no strain on the bolt when the engine is running, as its not really a moving part?

Can the remaining part of the bolt be removed out of the turbo housing? I bet its a pig to get at?

i would imagine that if you pull the turbo pipe off you will be able to remvce the remaining bolt with pliers.. if not then drill it and use "easy out"?

From underneath the car though, won't be easy from above the engine.

Don't know yet, not got that far....

If it's lose is it likely to do the engine any harm or will it just lose boost?

 The 5mm allen bolt head has gone....i pulled the TIP back and could see no visible thread:( the only way would be to remove the TIP (and sell it me:rofl: ) and replace with the Samco pipe.....there would be no way of drilling it out straight, so possible damage could be caused and i for one wouldn`t risk it:thumbdwn:

The pipe itself is actually quite tight on the turbo as the o-ring seems to be a nice fit.

 Phil

How in the hell did the bolt head shear off??

Hmmmm....better go check mine. ;)

Went down to Impossible Performance today to have it checked out.

The good news is it's not sheared and had just dropped out  , but new locking bolt now fitted :D cheers Mike!
