Locating a cars details

Featured Replies

At the moment i'm trying to find a car that used to belong to my uncle.

I have the reg, but is there anyway you can request, or search to find a cars location/owners ?

I'm interesting in offering to buy the car back from the owner if he/she was willing.

The car was sold locally in Edinburgh in about 1993, and i continued to see it up until a few years ago, although it changed hands a few times.

Any ideas ?

ASKMID should tell you if the car's still on the road (although using it for this purpose is technically a breach of the Data Protection Act, so I'm not recommending it; just saying it's possible! ;) )

Once you know that, it might be possible to write a polite letter to the DVLA, explaining why you want to know. I believe the wording of the DPA is something like 'reasonable grounds', so it's possible they might tell you on that basis! Otherwise, befriend a policeman and get them to do an index check on the sly!

The car isn't insured anymore, but was on that list up until last year.

Worth a try with DVLA though.

Any other suggestions before i write off to DVLA ?

DVLA is the only option, but they won't tell you unless your request complies with either section 29 or 35 of the Data Protection Act, which it doesn't.

There is no point in asking.

Thats that idea up the spout then !

Was it the kind of car that would have an owners' club? Since the DVLA won't be able to help, it might be worth seeing if the owners' club have a "where is it now?" section in their newsletter or something...?

Already trawled through the owners club, it has quite a large base up here in Scotland, and nobody has seen it.

One person knew the car, but the same as me, not seen it in a good while now.

The car i'm looking for is this.

Although thats a pic of someone elses , but it's identical to that in everyway.

Bit of a thread resurrection here....

Good news...Found the car. :D

Bad news is...Owner isn't willing to part with it.

It's in a good state, doesn't need as much work as i thought, but it's sitting alongside another 2 SD1's, and it's a kinda hobby for him.

He picked it up for 1k.

Gutted.

Well glad you managed to find it in the end but unfortuante about him not wanting to sell!

How did you track it down in the end?

Phil

try http://briskoda.net/general-car-chat/my-text-check/121613/ to see if its still about. you could try local dealerships to see if they have record of the car. All failing you could ring DVLA and enquire would they pass your details onto the owner etc that way it be up to the owner to contact you.

Ive only ever seen my old car once and that was coming onto the M40 and i had a motorbike once which the previous owner walked over to see how it was etc which was a bit wierd. If i ever did see any of my old vehicles i would if possible go over and say hi and see how they getting on with it as i believe if you have experience of that vehicle you might be able to point something out to them that they didnt know.

That was his era right enough, but sadly he was killed in 1989. Hence why i wanted the car back in the family.

SD1's are all time greats. :)

I didn't actually track it down, the new owner contacted me after reading my post on another forum.

Bill Nighy's car in RS&BT was a blue 2600; that's a red 3500 Vitesse!
