Different tyre sizes

Featured Replies

Hi

Just discovered that swmbo has different sized tyres on her 05 Fabia 1.4.

The rear are 195s andd the front 185s. The spare is 185

Is this normal? Would it be ok to put the spare on the rear if she has a puncture?

Any advice appreciated.

I'm 99% sure you should have the same size tyre on each corner. Are the fronts and the rears a different make of tyre? What make is the spare? That might give you a clue.

Thanks for your interest.

All 4 tyres on the car are Dunlop SP Sport 200, the 2 front are 185/60R 14 and the 2 rear are 195/60R 14.

The spare is something called Intensa Sava and it's 185/60R 14. It has a rotation direction arrow on it.

The car was bought from a Skoda dealer when it was 1 year old with about 9,000 miles on the clock. It has a month's warranty remaining and it's now done 19,000.

Comments welcomed!

14" wheels on Comfort or Elegance should come with 185/60/14 and the Classic comes with 165/70/14.

There shouldn't be any problem running the slightly wider tyres on the rear as I assume she doesn't drive on the limit and likewise putting a spare to replace either of them will not be the end of the world. However, ideally you want all 4 to be the same I would have thought.

'So it won't be an issue when it comes to its 1st MOT next month? ' he said with a slight tremble in his voice...........

I'm pretty sure it won't as the tyres on each axle are the same size.

Tyres & Wheels

  • TYRE CONDITION The reason for failure with respect to tyre wear is "The grooves of the tread pattern are not at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising: The central three-quarters of the breadth of tread around the entire outer circumference of the tyre". Tyres on any axle must be matched with regard to type, size and structure. Also general condition of tyres, condition of valves serious cuts, bulges or other damage.
  • WHEEL CONDITION
    - Damage, distortion, cracks, distorted bead rim securely attatched to vehicle, missing wheel nuts or studs.
    - The security of any externally fitted spare wheel or spare wheel carrier.

Thanks. Appreciate your help.

They will be fine, but whatever you do dont put the 195s on the front because they will throw the speedo out.
