Help! Flywheel problem

Featured Replies

hey guys i am from India and i own a Skoda Laura . I 've had a wonderful time with my car in last 1.5 years but last week while driving i heard a strange noise from the Engine compartment .. The noise used to dissappear when i press clutch . I took the car to the Service center and after two days i got a call and was told that the Flywheel needs to be replaced .. The car is only 1.5 years old so it 'll be replaced under warranty but unfortunatly the part is not available at the Service center and i was told that they wont get the part before 10-15 days ...

I need car urgent but i am not sure whether i should drive the car in this condition .. Guys , is it advisable to drive it in this condition ? will it lead to more problems ?

Thanks .

Sorry guys , forgot to mention Skoda Octavia II is known as Skoda Luara in India .

The flywheel is a very common issue on the Octavia II especially on the diesels. Personally I wouldn't drive it in case the flywheel comes apart and damages the clutch and/or gearbox. I

f that happens you might have problems with the warranty on the other parts because you and the dealer are now aware of the defective part.

And if the flywheel fails it will leave you stranded - potentially miles from where you live and work and more importantly it might fail and leave you stranded on a dangerous piece of road.

Hi dstev2000 thanks for the reply ... Even i feel that it could lead to few problems in the future but today morning i spoke to a Skoda technician and he told me that theres no problem in driving the car but he suggested against driving long hours ... I dont know what to do at this stage ?? Please pour in your suggestions guys ...

Thanks .

You should be fine as long as it is only just starting to go, eg the car it a bit jittery.

Just take it easy and don't drive it for long journeys or tow.

I would definately try to get it in sooner rather than later though as it can cause damage.

Get it in writing from the Skoda tech that's it's OK to drive then you're covered...

I agree it needs sorting quickly.

Ive had three flywheels on mine and still got judder.

Also had terrible grinding noise and then the gearbox went.

Coincidence? I dont think so

Thanks for the replies briskodaians . I am not taking any chances ,the car is parked since then . But one thing is confusing me, since its a flywheel problem ,is it only the

flywheel that needs a replacement OR is it the full assembly that includes the Clutch and pressure plate and Flywheel ?

Thanks.

In the UK Skoda will charge you for the clutch to be replaced at the same time.

I would ask to see the current clutch before they put it all back in as that way you can assess the damage to it/how worn it is and then replace if required.

A clutch kit is about £200 IIRC.

I have the 140 bhp with DSG box MK2 55 plate. I think it has been mentioned before but when i asked the dealer today did it effect any particular model they said it is known accross the VW and Mercedes ranges. Has anyone got any more info on this and if it does happen when the warranty runs out has anybody got an idea what it cost?.

Have VW bought up Mercedes now?

I certainly hope not...

I certainly hope not...

Wouldn't mind some of their engines though, 6.2litre V8 anyone? :D a few turbos strapped on for good measure? ;)

I think you might find that the DMF's are pretty much all made by saches and LuK.

DMF's are IMHO a ****e idea and either an SMF flywheel with some suitable vibration damping engine side, or a heavier SMF to mass damp the vibrations would have done the job fine.

DMF is a complex way to solve a problem caused by allowing engine vibrations to get too high. This is partly caused by the massive injection pressures used in modern direct injection engines.

hey brother even im having a problem with my skoda, flywheel, clutch and pressure plate all gone ,dealers say coz of clutch over ridding which i never did,

?????

what do u say about that

I just don't think the clutch is up to the job personally.

The DMF on all modern cars are Cr*p, on our fleet (taxi) we have nothing but trouble with them, from all makes.A SMF , basically one lump of metal has very little to go wrong, we try to change them to a SMF when they "go".(I remember getting an angle grinder to grind off three of the bolts that rounded on my old Octy, with that amount of sparks flying around the engine compartment, that f**k it was a diesel !!!)
