Aero wipers

Featured Replies

Have the genuine vw mk4 golf aero wipers meant to have a spline in them where they join to the motor spindle.I am sure my standard ones have a spline on them.

Thanks

Yes mine did.

You take the old arms off and push the new ones down in their place.

Mine did

Yep. Mine did too.

The set i just brought havent got the splines, they are genuine bosch vw arms and blades.

Thanks for your replies.

That seems wrong; the splines are what transmit the torque from the spindles into the arms. The nuts are there to retain the arms on the spindles, not to provide a friction drive.

Aye, think you've got the wrong arms somehow. I'd send them back, where did you get them from?

I think it's a manufacturing error, rather than arms for the wrong car. I've never seen arms for anything that didn't have splines on them.

One of the PSA cars I did some work on didn't. I forget which one though.

how did you guys get your arms off as i had a breif attempt last year and gave up as they really where on well and though i was about to pull the whole lot through the panel

I bought a removal tool which bent under the strain, I ended using it with 2 pairs of mole grips, which completely mashed up thread on the puller but got them off in the end.

I also bathed them in WD40 which did'nt help one bit. In fact I drove round all that day with out the nuts on trying the buy the tool and they did'nt fall off. My were what I would call a "ba5tard" to remove.

Note that I've not done this with an Octy, so it may vary in effort.

1) Loosen the securing nut. Don't take it right off, just loosen it.

2) Put a big screwdriver under the end of the arm, near the spindle, and twist until the arm comes loose.

3) Remove the nut and arm.

If you get really concerned at (2), note that the splines are often taper splines, so are tight. Also, you might try putting some PlusGas on them.

WD40/plusgas repeatedly over a week.

Apply it let it soak in , loosen bolt, press down on arm, do back up a bit too tight, looen to correct tightness nad plusgas/wd40 some more.

Repeat and eventually the rust will give way :D

If you ahve no splines it won't work however.

WD40 is a great water-proofing oil / light lubricating oil.

PlusGas is a specialised dismantling lubricant, and a million times better than WD40 for that one application.

lol, when I swapped the A4 arms I used my (edit: ball) joint seperater.

Actually, a ball joint splitter would be good, if you have one.
