Iam baffled !!

Featured Replies

This damn car is doing my head in.

Tonight whilst working i have been having no power s have been recently on and off but tonight was worse.

The dealers have changed the MAF and air filter 8000 miles ago.The have checked it recently and no fault codes are showing.

My only way of describing it is that it sounds like a carb engine without the air filter housing on and makes a pffffffft noise when driving it but there are no blows anywhere.t freely revs upto 5000rpm but i have no pick up between 1000 - 2000 rpm. When i switch off and on again its ok for a while an the turbo whistles freely but just cannot get full power out of it totally gutless engine.

Any ideas and help would be gratefully appreciated

My reply is based on my experiences with a 110 tdi Octy 1

Possibly a turbo problem, if the car starts to overboost the cars electronic brain basically pulls the boost right back to save things, when you switch the car off & restart it you reset things. The Turbo has variable veigns which move as the revs build, Older turbos tend to get sludged up & the veigns stick causing it to try & over boost at higher revs. New Turbos are quite expensive, a s/hand should be around £150. There are people who can strip & clean the turbo or if your mechanically minded it can be a DIY job, a few on here have done it

Ours went at about 120,000 miles, initially it only did it when the car was held flat out but over time it began to occur at lower & lower loads.

We didnt have the phhht noise & it seemed ok at low revs so possibly not the same but its def something causing the cars brain to back things off.

If you can find someone who can data log the car whilst running it might give a better idea of what the boost is doing etc & be a better pointer

Re Jap, Im just about to go back there but to be fair our Octys were great, our Skoda experience has been tarnished by the Superb

Ok thanks for that advice and help.

Its still under warranty as its a 2006 MK1 with 38000 miles.

Everyday is a different running engine with this car so weird.

It wont be a gummed Turbo at that mileage, Keep throwing it back at the stealer if under warranty, if they cant sort it try one of the VAG tuners, they normally have a better idea of how things work

If it's the same sort of VVT mechanism as the 110 engine has, it could get gummed on 38_000, if the car's doing mostly light throttle runs, or sitting idling on ranks a lot.

Thanks for that Ken.I do sit around on ranks sometimes idling but when i pick up and the engine is hot i do give it quick hard throttle after 2000rpm often to clear it out.At the moment i have no smoke coming out the rear as it is nightime when i drive and never notice a thing coming out on hard throttle.

Iam also using Millers additive too to help this. Its got me real baffled its so flat now and really holding back.

Sounds like you're going into limp mode. Suggest you vagcom it when it actually does it and see if there are any error codes yourself...

A tiny leak under boost can do this - bit difficult to test for sure but perhaps some talc powder dusted on the pipework and then driven for 5 mins will show a small leak....

Also try the "Italian tuneup" - drive it hard for about 10 mins once a week - heat up the turbo enough to shed any carbon buildup....

All else fails - as suggested above - take it to a tuner to diagnose the fault and then go to the dealer to get it fixed under warranty.

Good Luck

Cheers Basil for advice:thumbup:

Tonight when i was working i drove it like i stole it for quite a while. There was no smoke at all coming out and revved right up to 5000rpm freely but no limp mode at all.

Its very flat from 1000 to 2000rpm there is no boost but after 2000 to 2500 upwards it throws all the boost in.But mostly iam driving in the 1000 to 2000 range all night and thats where its like a retarded engine all flat and no power.Never used to be like this it always had a sensitive throttle and was very quick at picking up.Now i need to drive it like an SDi now giving it plenty of boot.

You can also try using vagcom to see requested versus actual boost - if there's a problem it should show up there.

Also, you have nothing to lose by trying it - try putting some dielectric silicone grease in the MAF connector boot - do a search for cage mod on here. Could be a poor MAF signal coming through.

Do keep us posted with your results, eh?

Good Luck

Yes will do Basil:thumbup:

Just let you know i have done the cage mod about a month ago with results too it did work.

  • 1 month later...

You've probably sussed it by now, but check the pipes that run to the top of the air filter box, if one of those is loose or split the power goes.

Also check the little pipe that connects to the bottom of the airbox below the MAF and ask meadens to check the N75 valve.
