Coolant loss

Featured Replies

When topping up my oil and screen wash today, I noticed that my coolant level was around a centimetre below the minimum line. The car is eleven months old and has only covered 7500 miles. I took it to Wings of Peterborough to buy some G12+ and asked the guy on parts if it was normal. He disappeared into the back and came back with the answer, "He can't say it is definitely a problem. Perhaps it was low when it was PDI'd and not picked up." I then pointed out that I had bought the car from them... The response was to top it up and keep an eye on it. Hmmm.

What do you think, chaps? Anyone had the same issue? There are no puddles under the car, by the way.

Thanks

The coolant got so low on my wife's car that the warning light came on. I couldn't find any leaks, though, and it appears that the expansion tank cap hadn't been re-fitted tightly enough after it was last in the garage so the coolant had been slowly boiling off...

Might just be that?

Cheers mate. I'll double check that when I top it up.

I had coolant loss on both my Golf and my TT, enough on the latter to trigger the warning light.

Coolant loss isn't uncommon or a problem as long as it isn't persistant and significant.

I'm on a similar mileage (8 months old) and noticed mine had dropped by about the same as you.

I topped it up and I've kept an eye on it. I've not noticed it going down since. If I was needing to top it up every other week I think I'd be worried.

Some water is bound to escape the system as vapour over time.

I had a faulty seal on a previous car and the loss was significantly more.

Many thanks for the reassurances Jonno and Aspman. I'll keep an eye on it, but all is probably well as you say.

You're welcome

Lol, mine is losing about half a litre a week

The dealer said they couldn't find the leak after pressure testing the engine.

I have noticed much more condensation from the exhaust from cold so could it be the EGR cooler per chance?

My Radiator had an internal manufacturing defect that meant it dumped a shed load of coolant then when topped up didn't use any. No idea if it would have continued to randomly dump it, but the radiator was replaced under warranty.

The low coolant light always appears on a Thursday or Friday after a long weeks driving. Never appears early in the week as the car isn't used as much over the weekend.

No signs of leaks under the car or in the belly pan either.

The car is also reluctant to start on Monday mornings (like me). It coughs and splutters into life as if the glow plugs are worn out.

Back to the dealers next week

**Apologies for my 'hijack of sorts' but it's a similar question to the OP's**
