Do 'Chips' Work? ?

Featured Replies

Hello from a 'newbie'

Will be taking delivery of my diesel vrs in April, I know its 'brisk to say the least' do these so called 'chips' on ebay that plug in to your engine loom really work to help performance or fuel economy

see ebay Item number: 350025031089 as an example

Any body got any good / bad / honest reviews or advice ?

Cheers Westfalia

Have a read of eBay.co.uk Guides - '20 BHP Tuning Chips' - The TRUTH. I think that woud summarise the opinion of most ppl on here.

If you want more, either go for a remap or a Digital Tuning Box such as the Dragon ones. Plenty of info on both these options if you do a bit of searching

The words '****ty' and 'stick' come to mind.

Uncontrolled overfuelling + DPF = potential ball ache.

Save your pennies and get something that will work.

Thanks for the input, I read the 'long thread' about how it works and now my head hurts....going to lie down now in a darkened room :o)

On another note, how much can you fettle the VRS with VAG-COM ??

When you say 'fettle' I presume you are referring to the engine?

If so then not at all i'm afraid, leave that to the pro's. There are lots of other little settings you can do with VAG-COM and it's a powerful diagnostic tool.

Going back to the resistor type mod - all it does is force the engine to inject more diesel to give more power but the downside is smoke. A cheap resistor mod will produce lots of smoke all the time and could overwhelm the diesel particulate filter and cause it to fail and put the engine in a low power 'limp' mode.

A digital tuning box does the same but with a little more sophistication so less smoke.

Oh and one more thing:

Welcome to the Briskoda madhouse :D

No not only the engine, my dad uses VAG COM on his vw's T4 102bhp camper and his new T5 174 Tdi that he is converting. Any nice little useful 'advances' on the stock set up would be gratefully received. No rush as the car doesn't land till Mid April :o(

Cheers for the help

Don't know about the engine and from a personal point of view I wouldn't even if I could for fear of it expiring in a shower of cogs and springs

There are countless threads on here about various adjustments people have made to their cars, Stu's site has a good list for starters:

Octavia-vRS.com - Octavia II Controller Coding

You need to check the version of VAG-COM you have too. The Octavia is on the A5 platform so ideally you would need HEX-USB+CAN interface. The T5 can use the KEY-USB adaptor which will NOT work on the A5 platform.

T4/T5: Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: Transporter / Eurovan Applications

A5 Octavia/Golf: Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: Golf / Jetta Applications

You get what you pay; in this case most likely a whole load of trouble.

The words 'barge pole' and 'touch' come to mind. ;)
