Xenons

Featured Replies

I done a bit of searching. Would I be right in saying that the picture below is of a Xenon headlight on my vRS.

Can't see headlamp washer cover so I'd say its normal halogen.

If you have no headlight washers and have dial for headlight adjustment beside light switch then they are defo halogens.

There is no headlamp washer so no its normal halogen

Edit: damn beaten to it:P

Does it have the ballast screwed to the back of the headlamp unit?

I've included a picture of my car with Xenons, you can see the headlamp washer cover under the light unit.

That's a halogen unless someone has tried to fit a xenon unit afterwards or the headlamp washers are missing due to a horrendous misbuild

Although having headlight washers only isnt a definate indication of having Xenons.

True, but legally the car needs them so if they are missing then it follows the headlights are not xenon (obviously after market units not withstanding).

I'll do some more investigation tomorrow in the day light. They look exactly the same as the headlight in my dads mk2 octy, and his has headlight washers. I think his is an elegance.

They look identical because they both use projector headlights (the 'eye ball')

But without the washers its unlikely they are Xenons (it may of had a new bumper on it though??)

IIRC the elegance has headlamp washers irrespective of xenon or halogen bulbs, the light units do look the same as they are both projector style lights. The car pictured doesn't have headlamp washers so not xenons, unless its had a new bumper without them or the headlamp units have been changed afterwards. As mentioned, cars with xenons don't have a headlight adjust dial on the dash by the instrument dimmer dial.

Pop the headlights and front foggies on, if they are the same colour that will confirm the halogens, if the headlights are more blue/white then you have xenons and a bit of a problem.

Elegance and L&K have washers as standard, 2007 L&K has xenons as standard too.

From the front there is zero difference between them, I parked 2 Elegances side by side, one with and one without and we couldn't tell the difference.

Nope, I reckon that is a standard halogen headlight unit too!

Think your right chaps. I didn't think they were but when I spotted xenon fitted cars that looked similar it got me thinking I might have got a miss build. lol. Still surprises me when I get flashed a lot at night. They must not be used to seeing such a good car on the roads.

My vote goes to aftermarket OEMish xenon job.

I've never seen an Octavia2 with halogens and projector headlamps. Also headlamp washers (and self leveling) are standard on the OEM, and you can't put a bumper without headlamp washers on a car that has them.

But thats the point, the headlights are identical to look at (from the outside) so they might of been halogens that you thought were Xenon's??

If the car has had a replacement bumper then anything is possible (if the bumper is damaged there is a chance the washers were as well, so taken off & not replaced).

Bear in mind the UK cars will be different to what you have seen in your country. As far as I know, you can get the Octavia with reflector type headlamps on the continent while the projector lenses are exclusively for xenon equipped cars.

In the UK we get projectors on all cars whether fitted with halogen or xenon units.

Exhibit A: Reflector type headlamps

We don't all get headlamp washers either, they are only standard on a few models. (Elegance, L&K and Scout IIRC)

Could the OP remove the headlamp unit and take a picture of the back of it? That should solve the mystery once and for all.

Below is a photo of my car (the black octy at the front) with OEM xenons, followed by cars with halogens on. The colour difference I think is fairly clear. :)

Hope you don't mind me using the photo Rich.

Indeed, I never considered this, nor was I aware. It's easier to make RHD headlamps like that, you just fit a different bulb shader.

However, the last part still applies. If it hasn't got washers it's either retrofit or not xenon.

You can also tell if it's xenon or not (apart from the light colour) by looking at the headlamp when turned on. It will tilt up, then down, then level itself.

Mine has halogens and projector lenses. It also has headlamp washers too.

I never said you can't order headlamp washers separately. Just that their absence on a xenon car tells it's not factory.

I am aware you can order headlamp washers on most brands either alone or as part of a winter package.

Easy way to settle it Captainscarlett is to stand at the front of your car at night and get some one to turn them on. When they first come on they will flicker as they get brighter over about 5-10 seconds. Also they will look very blue to start with. AFAIK they should move up and down as the Self Levelling calibrates but not sure if they do this all the time. Lastly when you turn them off the light goes off instantaneously. Not like a halogen light were you can see the light dim down over 1-2 seconds as the filament cools down.
