Tyre rant

Featured Replies

No real reason for this thread; sorry.

Just angry that this morning my rear, drivers side, tyre looked a bit flat (as it did last week). Pumped it up with my footpump and noticed a bubbling in the tread from all the water on it. Prised out a small (plastic) stone thing from between the tread and greeted to the fact that it had gone through the entire tyre leaving me with a hissing hole.

Wouldn't bother me so much, but the tyre (Goodyear Eagle GSD3) still has 6mm of tread left on it. Practically new.

Put the spare on this morning, considering the car's 4 years old and this is the first time it's been used isn't so bad.

The ar5e is deciding what to do now. I can get a single Goodyear replacement for around 80 quid, and deal with the difference in wear (rear axle). Or I can replace the pair with some Toyo's at around 62 quid each and waste a perfectly good 6mm tyre.

I can't bring myself to replace with two more Goodyears with them being 80 quid! And with the good one being 6mm it's not too far off new (8mm?) anyway.

So damn annoying. How does a blunt plastic chippy thing manage to pierce through a car tyre anyway? Grrrr.

Anyways; rant over. Thanks!

Why not see if it's repairable?

Yeah pull a "mushroom" through or a patch on th inside

Depending on where it is. If its towards the centre of the tyre then it should be able to be plugged. If its close to the tyre wall, then sometimes they wont fix them due to health and safety. Pop it in to a tyre firm and ask?

Might ask around. It's not that near the wall, but not central either. Are there not issues with repaired tyres? Never really thought about it to be honest... Hmmm

Repaired tyres are fine, i have had a few done over the years with no problems at all.

Cost a hell lot less to haha

A repaired tyre when fixed properly is as good as new!

No issues with repaired tyres, I always get it done where possibe. My local tyre place does it for free, only charging for the valve and rebalance. I had a repaired tyre on my old vRS, and it lasted quiet a few laps of the nurburgring and also did the briskoda bruntingthorpe meet. When the tyre was eventually replaced I had a look at the repair and it was still perfect.

Well I don't plan on any track days with these tyres, and with the current weather I'm not even pushing it to be honest; so I'll drop it into the tyre place and see what they think to repairing it.

Cheers guys; my day has slightly been lifted from the fun of changing a wheel in the early morning frost.

I've had the same tyre repaired twice for punctures in the last month, had no problems with it at all. And at 6 quid a time from the local tyre/terraced house establishment its cheap too :)

Ha, it's exactly on the limit according to those measurements. Guess I'll show it to them and see what they think. Cheers for that.

If it is not repairable, Toyos are an excellent tyre. I can't believe how well they stick compared to the continentals that have just come off. especially when it's greasy or wet.

Much less flashing yellow light issues on full throttle!

Bought mine for £53 each from tyretraders.

Boo, not repairable. Back to deciding on one expensive or two cheaper tyres :(

I would go with two toyos. I have toyos all round and they are excellent! You could always sell the good tyre on ebay or something?

  • Author

Thought about selling it, but a half-worn single (directional) tyre might be a bit of a niche item.

Was planning on trying the Proxies, just didn't want to fork out that cash just yet. Oh well; best get looking for the cheap places.

Thanks again to everyones help.
