anti-roll bar perhaps? clack clack clack from the front right wheel...

Featured Replies

Hi, I got a 2001 model Fabia, it's been running fine, but in the last day there is a light 'clacking' sound when I take a 'sharp right' at speed, or when I hit a bumpy part of the road. The noise is coming from somewhere near the front right wheel.

It does not happen when I drive straight, nor when I take a sharp left, nor a gentle right; only occurs sharp right at speed, or on bumps. Not a ringing metallic sound, but perhaps like the sound of a empty muted tin box being tapped, and it is not a very loud sound, but still quite concerning.

Any ideas what it could be? Perhaps the anti-roll bar issue? Otherwise performance seems to be ok.

CV joint IMO. Sounds exactly like it.....

i am not really that technical, so I do not know what CV joint means.. Do you think it may need a speedy trip to the garage or can it wait a week or 2?

CV joint is the universal joint that connects the driveshaft to the wheel hub...basically allows you to turn the front wheels whilst the gearbox still applies drive.

In short, not the most straightforward or cheapest of jobs. I'm sure if you do a search someone will have had this done before and you'll get an idea of costs and labour etc.

ok, thanks for the info. I am still driving it, but have booked it into the garage in Malmö (Sweden) for Friday so they can have a looky-looky. The mechanic assumed what the issue was over the phone, but did not tell me exactly what it was. I was quoted 3000 > 4000 Swedish Kroner so far ( £240 > £320 ). I will let you know how it develops after Friday...

sidenote: I have not been on the Forum page for a while. It seems to be very fast moving these days, and I was getting worried that my thread would be buried. Thanks for the help so far...

update: the noise stopped after 2 days, but I still took it to the garage. They could not find anything wrong with it, so let me have it back (no charge). Cheers for all your help.

Hi Andrew. Hope you have no more problems. If you do and it does turn out to be the front anti-roll bar, they (Skoda) changed the design re my 2001 1.4 8V, so had to be replaced, which was about £200 if I recall correctly, but I rang various dealers about it and they all said that if the new design was installed, it shouldn't go again, so at least it should be a one off job.

Just for info.

Regards
