Shudder in fifth gear suggestions appreciated

Hi there just bought a 05, octavia tdi 105 hp. Have noticed that in fifth gear (say 1500 rpm) there is a shudder that continues up to say 2000 rpm under full acceleration. After 2000 rpm there is no problem. Other gears this isnt a problem. The car has only covered 10,000 miles and just been serviced. Would appreciate some feed back if this is normal. Car still under warranty for one more month so thought best check it out! Thanks everyone

Had a fabia tdi before and this wasnt a problem.

I think your revs are too low for that gear for the speed you would be probably be doing.

I don't think it's a case of the revs being too low as there is tons of torque at 1500-2000 rpm and the engine pulls quite well at those revs. As long as the revs don't steadily drop it isn't labouring too much.

I have a similar phenomenon with my 2.0TDI. There is a shuddering at those sort of revs but only in higher gears when the engine is under high loads. My previous 2.0TDI didn't do it and was more than happy to pull at 1500 rpm onwards.

It could be a Dual mass flywheel issue as it's there to reduce the vibration and pulsing from the engine which protects the clutch and gearbox.

I would imagine the DMF is working hardest under the described conditions.

I've also noticed my clutch is starting to judder when pulling off when everything is cold.

I think it would be prudent to get your dealer to check it out as DMF failures are commonplace.

I stand corrected then - perhaps I am likening it to a petrol engine

I've been driving turbo diesels for years now and they have all been more than happy to accelerate from 1500 rpm, sometimes lower than that if the conditions permit.

I've never been able to do it with an N/A petrol though, there just isn't enough oomph :thumbup:

Sounds clutch/ flywheel related to me.

I'd say the revs are too low and the shudder you're feeling is the DMF taking the strain.... if you're going to accelerate hard, best to do it after peak torque is developed imho (just after 2k rpm) which will prolong the DMF's life.

I still think it's a problem that needs to be checked with your dealer. I've never experienced this shudder in any other diesel and my driving style is the same.

Saying that, i've experienced that on the company pool car (1.9tdi). Its quite a violent judder up to 2,000rpm. Not bothered checking it out

It should be getting changed soonish as its around 55k now and almost 3 years old now.

Our 1.9TDi does this too. If you use full throttle in top below 1800rpm. I am led to believe that this is normal.

Could this be the 1.9TDi stuttering problem?

Mine does it under acceleration around 1800-2200 revs particularly if accelerating up a gentle slope - I've just got used to it but may be getting it sorted at the next service.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I shall be contacting my dealer for them to have a look. Best get it noted now with a month remaining on the warranty!

Do a quick search on the forum for engine 'judder'. I have the same problem with my VRs TDi. I've been into the dealer and..at the moment they are saying that it is a 'top engine bracket'. Which is set to be replaced when the part arrives. I will update on any changes etc.

That's why we like Diesels ;)

I'm saying DMF or EGR issue.

Dirty EGR means not enough torque being produced due to bad combustion.

DMF - Don't even get me started on them, first time it goes outside of warranty if I have it the car is getting an SMF conversion.
