Will a smoke test check for holes in turbo pipes?

Featured Replies

Hey again,

Still haven't got my underperforming VRS sorted. The turbo isnt giving out enough power, which it did do before. I did have a couple of fault codes but mechanic deleted them before I wrote them down (177xx and 176xx).

I've read these forums thoroughly, and you guys suspect that it could be a leak in one of the pipes to the right of the dipstick? Are there any other possible things it could be, eg Throttle Body dirty etc...?

Anyways, I've got it booked in at a garage on tuesday, and they said they'd do a smoke test and pressurize the syytem up to find any holes in the pipes. Would this find the hole that could be causing me all this bother? Is there anything else they could check whilst its in the garage?

I'd check myself, but I'm not very good with engines and limit myself to doing basic servicing.

Sorry for pestering you fellas, I hope you can appreciate my whinging :(

If they're doing a static (engine off) pressure test, or blowing smoke in the intake (engine running), that should find a leak. I'd have thought that, unless it was just spoofing a sensor, VAGCom would show the existence of a leak as low logged boost though?

They dont have vagcom. They have some generic fault code checker and monitor. I'm a bit isolated (morayshire) so this is the best garage im gonna get to br honest.

I took my vrs to a vw/audi specialits with the same symptoms as you described. As I understand they pressure tested the air circuit (engine swithed off) to find a leak, as this simulates the turbo providing boost to all the appropriate pipes, and therefore give a reliable simulation as to what is happening on the road. 1 new double lip seal and a re-circ dump valve later and all is well! Afaic after vagcom its the best way to isolate the issue. Hope that helps:thumbup:

Not always Ken, my hose from the main charge pipe to the n75 had split clean through and never showed a fault.

Yes agreed and really an air pressure test would be the way to go which any main dealer and most good garages can do for you

Thnaks for the replies fellas, ill ask them to clean the throttle body also. Its probably going to be a bit minging as its got 104k on the clock

Cheers guys. That was an opinion, rather than a "known fact", and useful to know.

Early reports from the garage are that the smoke test hasnt found any leaks. Anything else I can ask them to do?

Are there any GOOD pictures that can help me locate suspect pipes as I've been finding it very hard to look for myself so far :(
