:mad:The barstads have 'sold out'. The 'Kuro' range trounces any lcd out there, matched only by Panasonic commercial plasmas. ( Fujitsu too, have announced an end to plasma production ).

lcd's are so cheap to produce (think pioneer will use Sharp panels, not even their own!) the lure of the profit is too much for them, sadly people will flock to buy there Pioneer lcd's, believing there buying into a brand that stands for premium quality.

Yep i'm currently looking at a couple of plasmas one for ourselves and one for my folks and i'd heard this info from various sources on the net.

The folks already have a Panasonic LCD but want to move that upstairs so they can have a plasma in the living room instead.

It's currently looking like the Panasonic TH37PX80B for the folks and the TH42PX80B for us. I'm not sure but i think Panasonic are now the only major producer of 37" plasmas.

I'm just not happy with LCD after watching my folks set a few times.... It's great on the HD channels but really does look poor on SD channels...... And it cost £1200 quid when they got it this time last year.

Cheers

Dave.

Even on HD material the so called better lcd's (ie Sony X 3000 series) suffer from awful

'judder' on panning shots, you are right to consider panasonic plasma.

My dad has just got the panasonic PH10, its a commercial panel (not 1080p)

its awesome on sd and upscaled dvd. £750 from av sales for 42", you buy terminal

boards as extras (ie HDMI or component inputs) no built in speakers or tuner, just a

display, but is on a par with Kuro panels. Easy to set up too. Don't overlook these

there built like tanks, if your a fan of build quality take a look.

Cheers for the info..... The two we're looking at are the same unit just 37" & 42" versions..... They aren't 1080p but i'd heard from numerous sources that on these size screens the differance between 1080i and 1080p would be hard to see when viewed from the 10-13ft distance they'll be viewed from.

It also looks like the prices are nearly spot on the price of the outgoing 70 series..... £799 for the 37" and £899 for the 42" with a 5 year warranty and 2 years 0% finance from Panasonic themselves. They've also finally caught up with the other manufacturers of the lower priced models by having the likes of 3xHDMI ports etc.....

I haven't actually seen the picture quality on the new 80 series yet but the 70 series had a blinding picture quality.:eek::eek: And the reviews i've seen say the 80 is better still.

Cheers

Dave.

No, you're right, 1080p for space invaders etc on your x-box360, for real world viewing

720p is just fine, and doesn't struggle so much with SD (1080p panels effectively have to

double up standard def to fit tv's native resolution, normally resulting in a mess!)

I too have heard good noises about new 8 series panny's, most notably there aggressive

pricing and continued high quality.....that said, there's nothing wrong with PX70 (37")

and are being snapped up for around £500 mark, whats left of them.

Only firm advice I would give is that 42" ( from mine and me dads experience )

quickly goes from 'is this too big?'.... to 'wish I'd gone for the 50"!' .

And that seems to be a common experience.

LOL..... The folks will be happy with the 37" as they only live in a small terraced house and the 42" would be just too overpowering in their small living room. It's taken me 3 years to work the mrs up from 32" to 37" to 40" to 42" so i'll quit while i'm ahead and go for the 42" i think..... :D

Just got to find a nice glass unit that's wide enough to fit sky+, DVD, CD, Amp, Xbox360 & centre speaker under the plasma.... But not too wide as to stop access to the window behind..... About 4ft wide should do it.

Cheers

Give me 1/2 hour or so and I'll post a pic of mine (is black) and was only about 70quid

is 1 meter wide, will try and post a link to vendor too.

Cheers..... I've seen one from John Lewis that is around 4ft wide or there abouts..... costs £130 though.:eek::eek:

But SD doesn't scale ideally into either HD resolution.

576 lines doesn't go brilliantly into 720 or 1080 , though it is neater for 480 line NTSC dvds.

When I do eventually get a HD TV I'll be after 1080 lines but that's as much because I'll be running a PC through it and the extra desktop area will be handy

go for 1080p, the clarity on hd-dvd/blu-ray/skyHD is amazing with a decent source.

a 1080i screen won't have a res of 1920x1080 normally.

Pics as promised.

Will dig out product code to google if you like it, as I can't remember

who I bought it from online.

Lower panel resolution (720), when displaying SD material, tend to display less

artifacts such as pixelation and 'jaggies'.

Pics as promised.

Cheers for those fella...... It might be slightly too narrow for me..... How wide is it roughly??? I need to fit 6 items under it.... Sky+, DVD player, CD player, Yamaha DTS/DD amp, Xbox360 & centre speaker.....

Although thinking about it i do like the height of the lower shelf as i could put the amp with the CD player on top at one side of the lower shelf and the DVD with the Sky+ box on top of it on the other side then have the centre speaker and Xbox360 on the upper shelf.......

It's all coming together. :D

I really must apologise to the OP for totally and blatantly hijacking this thread. :o

They look ok, if a bit pricey!

Follow my link, have dealt with these guys and they're ok.

'Piggy backing' dvd players etc is ok so long as you don't block vents

am going to have to do this myself as I've a new centre speaker coming tomorow:thumbup:

I guess it comes down to weather or not the extra 200mm is critical, as that appears

to be the only difference with the two you're looking at.

100cm All Black Glass TV Stand

or for 1200mm wide

120cm Black Glass TV Stand looks remarkably similar to JL one but nearly

50 quid cheaper:rubchin:

They've got some nice units there..... I quite like the units with the bracket on the back to fasten the plasma too..... Might see if the mrs likes those too..... Cos lets face it i really won't have much input on this one other than the width. :D:D

Cheers again

Dave.

Yeah, cantilever stands are cool, the old man's got one (pictured further up)

I'm logging off now, andypandypoo's gonna go 'ape-sh!t' when he sees what we've

done to his thread, sorry!

basically, the proper bo KURO was the best display available (other than CRT? debatable?) and Pioneer are stopping making them and switching to gay-*** lcd cos they want to make a profit :thumbdwn: the only possible glimmer of hope is that fact that a lot of Pioneer engineers and tech have gone to Panasonic...
