Help! Engine cover issues! (urgent)

Featured Replies

Folks, This is pretty urgent as i use the car every day to get into college. Today I changed the temp sensor on the engine and needed to remove the engine top cover. The car is a 1.4 Mpi 8V. That all went fine and the sensor is in place. The problem came when I started to re-attach the engine cover. The bolt holding it in position on the front sheared as i was doing it up, maybe i over tightened it? The cover is now really wobbly. I would almost prefer to run without the engine cover from now on but the problem is that the oil filler cap is attatched to the top cover and does not screw into place in the hole left in the top of the engine. What can I do? do I have to destroy the cover to get the correct attachment?

Many thanks dudes and dudettes!

Anyone?

if the cover will still come off, try to extract the sheared bolt, if you are unable to extract it you will need to drill it being carefull to drill it in the centre, using a small diameter drill than the bolt as not to damage the threads, then use an easy out to extract the stud. but as a quick getaway can you secure the cover using cable ties?

Look under the cover. There is usually a spare oil filler cap attatched to the underside.

Thanks guys, i'll take a look tomorrow for the spare cap. Is there a spare part (the filler cap) i could get in order to permenantly remove the engine cover? It rattles agains the strut brace anyway.

Hi there Doogie, i've got exactly the same problem as you, mine just rattles, leaving a gap between the rocker cover and the cap itself, letting oil splurt down the front of the engine, and eventualy onto the driveway. Tie wraps dont work for long.

The best way is this. Look at the dipstick rubber tube attached to the cover, you will see a gap between the rubber tube and the metal dipstick housing, remove the engine cover (with rubber tube attached) get a small jubilee clip and place it over the rubber tube. re-attach the engine cover and then tighten the jubilee clip so it clamps the rubber tube against the metal dipstick cover. Hey presto!! no more rattles (and no more oil leaks from the cap)

oo nice tip, it annoys be so much. also baffles me out there is no real attachment for the oil cap to connect to the engine:confused:

There's no need - it's only to stop oil splashing out all over the engine bay. It doesn't retain pressure like the expansion tank cap or anything...
