Smoothwall

Featured Replies

Is it worth it?

I have been pondering installing a firewall/proxy for a while and the obvious choice would be smoothwall for simplicity, is it actually any good?

Its not bad, i used to use it back in the days before ADSL, where it shared a unlimited dialup internet package and also ran our 512k ADSL for a while until routers dropped in price.. its not really worth it for a home system these days because it effectively ties up a box. (a p233 back then)

your better going for a Linksis Router and putting the hacked-WRT firmware on it if you want to fiddle.. (DD-WRT or OpenWRT)

other than that Draytek routers are fantastic routers for the more technically advanced that support IPsec and inbound VPN connections :)

We have the spare box, thats not a problem. Its for our office, ideally what we want is some kind of traffic shaping if anyone knows of anything?

what about the free opensource version of 'untangle' installed on the spare box?

looks very promising and recommended by some folks over on ocuk forums linux section

Have a look into Monowall

I don't know if Smoothwall 3.0 does packet shaping but version 2.0 doesn't.

It works well as router/firewall. I've been using it for a few years without problems.

Others have recommended IPCop as an alternative to Smoothwall. I have just downloaded it but haven't installed it yet.
