Front wheel bearings

Featured Replies

Skoda Octavia est 1.9tdi year 2000. I get a squeal from the n/s front brake when cornering to the left. It disapears on the straight sometimes and if not just a light touch on the brake pedal quietens it. I presume it is slight wear on the front wheel bearing. Can it be adjusted to take up the wear?

Front wheel bearings cant be adjusted they are the roller bearing type which are done up very tight thats it.

Never really heard a wheel bearing giving a squealing tbh, usually hummings or rumblings. With you touching the brake pedal and it going id suspect you have a sticky brake pad on the n/s that is touching the discs when under load. I would hazzard a guess that you have FSIII front brakes on your car. This is very common. All you need to do is whizz the pads out, give the carrier a good clean with a wire brush and put some copper lube on the contact areas of the pads (assuming they are ok wear wise).

This should sort it.

That said, octavia wheel bearings are quite weak for the.. ahem... enthusiastic driver.

I've replaced one and think I need to do it again, front left, at 64k.

Yeah id agree, ive changed plenty but not for that particular fault.

Bleeding pain in the rear getting the inner bearing race off the drive hub when you push it out because of the ABS ring, not my fav job I must admit.

I'd agree with Ross ~ the noise you have is NOT a bearing.

put some copper lube on the contact areas of the pads

I'd suggest you're better putting the copper lube on the rear of the pads instead  ~ where they contact with the piston / carrier.

Indeed ;)

Where the pad contacts the carrier

Thx guys,

I didn't relish a bearing change. Just done a 250 mile trip and it's no worse so I'll check the brakes as advised
