How much should I expect to pay for a service on my 1.4 16v Fabia ('04 plate)? It had a cam belt at its last service (38000 miles) and now, at 48000, the spanner has just come on on the dash so I need to book it in for a service. Mitchell Skoda have quoted me £180 + VAT for the service, but that seems awfully steep to me considering there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the car and it doesn't need the cam belt doing. What work are they likely to be carrying out at this service that justifies such a cost? Any help gratefully received.

Depends on exactly what was done at the last service. It is likely to be due for an air filter, plugs, pollen filter + the usual oil and filter. They should also strip, clean and lubricate all of the brakes, but it far more likely that they will only inspect them as that is all that Skoda require. My local dealer in Middlesbrough still services brakes the old fashioned (proper) way and actually strips them down.

My reckoning is that garages around the country have standardised charges (so it makes little difference where one is) based on age of car as well as mileage and they do what they say that's posted up on a list displayed. If there isn't a list displayed or available, then I don't know. Of course, how one would know that they had done these things, or if they might highlight other areas needing attention probably depends more on your confidence in the garage you're taking your car to. Just my thoughts, being someone reliant on garages.
