Oil cooled radiators

Featured Replies

Morning all, i have heared along the underground grape vine, that Oil cooled radiators are more productive than the standard rad.

Is this true as am wanting more performance as told they deliver more. Don't want to change my car as i love the bugger..

How would they increase the performance? AIUI, you want your engine to run as HOT as possible without stuff boiling / melting / warping. The intercooler's a different matter of course, but you're stuck with air/air for one of them, or at most a water spray...

I don't really think cooling something WITH oil is very common-practice at all. I've never seen or heard of it.

You're not getting confused with an oil cooler, by any chance? If so, your Fabia's already got one!

just thought i'd check. somone called them a performance radiator. think its on POTN.com

whats one o them please:rolleyes:

Has the Furby got an oil cooler? I thought all the Furby had was a radiator for the coolant, a Heat Exchanger for the AC, a Turbo Intercooler and a Fuel Cooler.

mine has a bottle of pink liquid

whats one o them please:rolleyes:

Here's a schematic of one for the Fabia TDi:

[edit] Forgive me: might be getting confused with the fuel cooler - AFAIK, the oil cooler does a similar job to the radiator, but for the transmission oil. You want that to be as cool as possible... [/edit]

is that a VRS. mine only 1.4 16v sport

The 1.4 16v has one too, it's just slightly different! :) But I don't think it's the sort of thing you'd want to mess about with in a performance mod kinda way... :smirk:

IIRC ther can be two types, one, the heat exchanger, where the coolant is used to take heat out of the oil or visa versa (can't remember which)

Number two is the air cooled type where the oil passes through a radiator and the air from the front passes through it.

Not sure what tupe is on the vRS, would be interesting to know.

Isn't the fuel cooler under the car, under the drivers seat area? mine has blue pipes going to it?

OK, so I am getting confused! I'll butt out and leave this thread to folk who know more about these things than I do!

:sofahide:

Maybe thinking of an intercooler in a liquid bath? Similar to the Celica GT4 ?

If that's the case, the fella wouldn't have any use one for one on his Sport...

Oops, never realised it was a sport :o

:D

Is the OP refering to using oil as a coolant rather than water? If so, iirc Suzuki used to use such a system - Suzuki Advanced Cooling System - early 90s? From what I can remember the chosen oil's thermal properties were inferior to water so I'm not sure what the point was unless you could combine lubricating and cooling systems for, guffaw, simplicity.

Or I'm delerious and completey wrong in which case I do have an excuse ;)

Well that's what I originally thought, although as it's a 'grapevine' question, I wonder whether someone's heard of something, who's told someone else, who posted it on an internet forum, which was then read by someone else, who then re-posted their interpretation of it in response to a different query...

Much like the advice I give on here, then! :o

Found somthing simalar, it an alloy radiator:rolleyes:

The oil cooler on the vRS is a coolant to oil heat exchanger fitted under the oil filter housing. Pretty much the same is fitted accross the engine range. The fuel cooler is on the return fuel line under the car in line with the drivers seat. The radiator is at the front (water to air) behind the a/c condensor. The intercooler is behind the bumper on the o/s.

(as standard of course, think that covers it).
