DIY front wheel bearing.

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm after some help please.

I need to replace a front wheel bearing on 54, VRS.

Can i do this at home with made up pullers, hammers etc to drift in the new bearing, as i dont have correct pullers/press.

Has any one managed it OK?

I'm handy with the tools, just dont have the right ones ;)

Any cheap place to get the parts? is it same part for all Octavias?

Thanks for any help, car now grounded untill i can get the job done.

Cheers.

Pu it this way, you might be able to do it.

But if you dont have the right tools there is a very good change you will bugger the new bearing, and you probably wont know until you have it all back together and running again.

It is possible as i have done mine, but it is a pain in the bum.

If you have a press you are onto a good start but you also need some very flat ended pullers (i forget the proper name) to get the bearing off the shaft. I used a bit of heat on the bearing then it just knocked off with a hammer.

Be prepared for a lot of swearing.

I just use a small cut off tool to get the inner race off.

Thanks for replies guys.

First hurdel, my 30mm socket is a 6 flat:rolleyes:

Typical.

Waiting to see what price and when mate can do it, or might be to halfords for a socket !

Good links but the bit i got stuck with was getting the inner race off the hub. I cannot see any mention of this,or am i missing it? Abit of heat worked a treat though.

You will a press or the gear listed in your link.

I think in both cases they replaced the hub, so not having to pull off the inner race.

Any hire places on line? or any national chains for the right tools?

Cheers

Quick up date.

Mate who is a mobile Mech, did both front bearings for £120 parts labour.

I gave him a hand, no presses or special tools used. Would do it on my own again no probs, just need a big hammer ;o)

Only tricky bit was driffting inner race of free hub, ABS disk in the way a bit, just ground a slot in race and driffted off through a hole in ABS ring.

Now back on the road agian, and smiling.

Thanks for all your input guys.
