Hi Guys,

Got abit of a problem with my Octy now it has a thermostat in it.

It seems to overheat (although its never gotten into the red zone as I caught it before it did).

It only seems to 'overheat' when on the motorway or when I have been driving around in traffic for a long time, and then joining a higher speed road?

Now it doesn't use any coolant nor is there any water on the dipstick. And I have been led to believe this sounds exactly like a waterpump thats on its way out, as it can't circulate enough water around the engine at high loads?

The car is a 1999 AEE engined car with 83k on it. Does this seem like it is the waterpump? As I've never heard of the AEE suffering from waterpump problems?

Does sound like the WP although I'm no expert.

I agree. These are the exact symptoms I had just recently when my OVRS water pump failed. Temp seems OK on idle, or even when driving very carefully and not hoofing it. As soon as you give it some power, it shoots up very high (my warning light and beeper also came on). It was deffo the water pump. It was the OEM plastic impeller type, and most of the fins had broke off. They had to be fished out of the water ways. This also meant new timing belt, etc. I was given the old pump as a souvenir - although, the fact that the mechanic gave me the old WP, the thermostat, the temp sensor, the old timing belt, the timing belt guides, the tensioner, etc. probably just meant he couldn't be ar$ed to dispose of them himself :finger: I also got ripped off at £650 :eek:

200% water pump mate!!

Make sure you get one fitted that has the brass impellor , not the $hitty plastic OEM item.

Get the timing belt & tensioner changed at the same time.

Does it really need the belt and tensioner? It was only done 3000 miles ago!

Thats a sod you got belt done and not the water pump,nightmare as the belt needs to come off again to fit the water pump.

No you won't need new belt and tensioner.

Aye, the belt and tensioner were done when I bought the car, as part of the sale. And it was before I knew about the recommendation of changing the waterpump at the same time.

Though it now explains why my car didn't have a thermostat, someone must have removed it as the car was overheating!

were and how much are the brass ones?

are they an audi part?

Those were my exact thoughts but didn't mention it in case you had removed it! Whoever the half job was is a bit -> :crazy: <-

Only thing that is throwing me off is my heater still works, quite well even when the car is hot?

And I thought a symptom of the waterpump going was the heater not working well?

What part of the thermostat did you change? The whole housing or just the stat itself?

Just the thermostat.

Make sure your radiator is ok ...is it hot all over or do you have cold spots

That could well be the problem then, On the AEE the thermostat doesnt pack up. A small piece of the end housing breaks off meaning when the centre pin expands out of the stat it has nothing to work against so remains closed. Probably find the end cap is bust and that is the root of your problems.

Hmmm, if the thermostat wasn't working properly wouldn't it overheat all the time?

In theory yes, just telling you what I know from years of ownership and experiance on that particular. Not done many water pumps, done hundreds of stat housings. The whole housing is less than £40 and comes with a new temp sensor. Its a waste of time looking at it just to change the stat on its own..imho.

Ouch... I had full service, cambelt water pump and rear pads for £620... Bumped...
