Sludge around the oil filler cap

Featured Replies

Changed over my head and sidelights for new bulbs today and while doing the usual engine checks I noticed a watery sludge around the oil filler cap.

I checked the oil level which was fine and the cap was fitted securely so where's it come from? Anyone else had this?

Have you been doing a lot of short journeys? I get it quite a bit especially over the winter months (1 mile each way to work :o). Wipe of the sludge and go for a good long drive, the cap should be clear afterwards :). (presume you have checked coolant level and no frothing on the dipstick when you checked the oil.)

Wonder if it appeared due to sloppy filling when it was last serviced?

Journey to and from work is 9 miles so it's shortish. Plus I had a more 'spirited' than normal "fun Friday" where I take it through the rev range just so it knows what it's like :D

I thought this but thinking back I didn't see it two weeks ago when I last checked over the engine bay. How tight is the filler cap cos even secure it felt a bit loose.
