hissing on medium wave

Featured Replies

I have a Felicia 2000 which whines terribly on MW (particularly five live) radio and seems to get louder the higher the RPM. FM is fine.

Common fault on this radio / car ? How can I fix?

It sounds like a bad earth

I'd say check your aerial

Mine hasn't had this problem

That's incredibly common. A set of suppressed HT leads will usually do the trick. Actually I'm surprised you haven't got suppressed leads already, most modern ones are, or maybe they aren't any more because no one listens to MW radio (supposedly!). Just ask in a car parts shop for 'suppressed HT leads' - it usually says as much on the box. Any set of leads for a 4-pot engine will do, there's nothing engine-specific about them (or rather, the Felly is not one of the few cars that requires a special set - a very few do).

Very often alternator related noise if it's a whine that increases with revving, always had to fit a filter in the live feed when MW radio was the norm in my youth.

Alternators? I've had that with dynamos, which had a commutator - alternators have slip rings and don't normally give the same trouble.

Well there you go - just cos it's never happened to me doesn't mean it's never happened to anyone! I stand corrected.

:D and the cure is in the second post of this thread
