What does this dashboard light mean?

Featured Replies

I've got a 1.4 MPI, but a friend has the 1.4 16V and it seems to have a dashboard light that I don't recognise... is it the replacement for the EPC light?

Car is a 1.4 16V 2001

thats the engine management light.

Yup, thats the CEL. There will be fault/s on the ECU that can be read with vagcom or by the dealer. :)

Thanks devonutopia!

My problem now is... working out what the hell is wrong with it... the garage have had it in under warranty to fix this dashboard light.

I'm guessing they've thrown new sensors at it and it hasn't made any odds... as the light returned shortly after it left the dealership.

Using the search on here i've found a list of probable causes.

  • Brake pedal switch
  • EGR fault
  • Lambda (O2) sensor fault
  • Piston rings fault
  • Air filter contaminated with oil
  • Air filter fitment needs cleaning
  • Temp sensor fault
  • Throttle body needs cleaning

tis a shame I didn't invest in VAG-COM... but perhaps I can get the garage to tell me the fault codes

look in the vag-com forum and see if a member near you has it.

Hi there Colin here

I also have the EPC light just come on, what do you recommend I do, reading the forums it sounds like no-one can pinpoint the problem exactly.

You need the fault code read off to start with.

My 52 plate fabia estate comfort 1.4, 16v also displayed the EPS and wee engine symbols yesterday. The EPS eventually went out, but wee engine is still lit- stupid question, but is this serious (costly to repair)?. The book says visit the dealer, so how long can I run with the wee engine lit?- already done 40 odd miles to get home!!. Update I switched on and ran it today and the engine light never came back on. Should I still go to the dealers?. Is it worth getting one of those VAG code readers?.

Ignorance is Bliss or is it?!.

Sounds plausible, mine tends to come on when going to and from Manchester and being stuck in heavy, barely crawling traffic. A couple of days 'smooth' journey or a toddle down hte motorway and it goes off again.

Garage has checked everything, sensors seem to be in tolerance and my emissions are spot on so I put it down to being stuck behind a white van man kicking out shed loads of crap.

Certainly air quality has summat to do with it as it never comes on when I'm driving around country, just if I'm stuck in shuffling traffic.

EDIT: Helpfully, the code returned is normally

I figure, an old 'std' carb would of just 'burped' and carried on merrily.

Always meant faulty EGR valve when it has come lit up on my car.

A few days ago the coolant temperature gauge started working erratically. Yesterday the car had its MOT and passed. Today the electronic engine management light came on and stayed on. I was in town at the time -25 miles from home - but got home with no apparent problems. Nearest garage is Ford dealer. Question is how safe is it to continue to drive car without getting this fixed as car is needed for work, including weekend. Garage can't do anything till Monday at earliest.

colkai,

have a look at this

edit: did a search seems you've been here before lol

Aye, already had my MAP sensor done, light came back on 2 days later - Arrggh :P

Even had a new temp sensor.

As long as it isn't upsetting the running of the car, I've decided to live with it as the garage weren't confident that even replacing other sensors would guarantee it not returning.

Had all pipes checked for leaks too, they came out in the clear, go figure.

@ colkai: When they replaced the temp sensor, did they replace the housing also as apparently it can get a hairline crack that's behind so hidden from view. Just a thought, but I normally leave my aircon on all the time; I switch off the outside air if following a diesel.

@grant123: If it is a problem with the temp sensor, it might start stalling on you whilst idling in traffic, or possibly not restarting for a while after fully stopping. Not sure about Ford dealers (I'm just an owner), but perhaps find out by phone if they can read off the fault codes (which you can post up on here) and they have expertise with Fabia 1.4's as they are quite quirky little things. The engine light is a catch-all so a fault might not be apparent/detectable to someone without background knowledge of them. In generally, a garage might just "re-set it" for you, but if it comes back on and stays on, it'll need to be sorted IMO. I assume you've checked the usual, e.g. oil, coolant level, and have no other lights on...

@heresmo

The light came on after filling up with petrol so first thought was had I put in diesel?. Anyway no problems driving home and today the light is gone! There was nothing obvious that I could see so have decided just to keep an eye on it and get the garage to look at it soon, just in case.

Yup, they said it was worth just replacing the whole thing for the cost involved and having read around the forums, I decided that was the wisest course of action.

The light has been off for over 2 weeks now and came back on last night, the car has never yet shown any sign of bad running. The mechanic seems to think the front and rear lambda sensors are "having a disagreement" as they have had it on emissions and tests several times and it's never wrong, neither is my MPG affected, still getting around +47mpg at 70-ish on the motorway, around 53 if I stick around 60. Very odd.

If they could nail it to a sensor I hadn't replaced it would help.

Ive had the same problem, light on and off. My car 1400 16v failed MOT with emissions - main dealer replaced lamda sensor and temp sensor and said now it will be fine. Ive taken it for a retest and the MOT guy says the emissions are higher than last time. I could scream £217 for those sensors and still it failed. Going back to main dealers tomorrow.

Yup, one reason my garage is wary of changing anything.

All emissions as they should be on every check but this stupid car and the multiple sensor problems is driving me mad.

I've ordered one of them there usb code reader / reset thingy-ma-bobs from EBay as at least it'll save me forking out for the garage to print out the little slip, resetting the code and charging £30 only for it to come back on 3 days later.

Egad but I miss my little Felly (Pinky), none of this rubbish with her. Ahh, the joys of "improved" car design.

Just glad I don't have one of those "wipe me ar$e for me" type cars, can you imagine the problems in waiting with them? Eeek!

Going in the garage on Sat. for a once over, see if they have any more ideas. I know one thing, I sure as heck wouldn't buy another Fabia after my experiences with this, which is a shame as overall it isn't a bad little car.

Still getting around 38/40 mpg on my journey to work, which is pretty busy, but I don't know if I'm starting to "feel" things that aren't there but I swear she feels a bit lumpier today.

Just an update, took my Fabia back to Main dealer this morning - was given a lift back in a demo car and then picked up aswell this afternoon - very thoughtful.

And, they found a sporadic fault for egr valve. Stripped, cleaned egr valve and pipes, stripped and cleaned throttle body and now its all A-OK. Oh and they put it through a new MOT for me as my freebie retest at the other MOT station had elapsed. No charge for any of it.

So pretty pleased with the service.
