Urgent - Castrol RS Brake Fluid

Featured Replies

The only Castrol brake fluid my local Halfords sell is the Castrol Response Synthetic Brake Fluid DOT 4. Is this the Castrol RS I've seen recommended on here?

I'm looking to change my Dot3 AP Racing luid as I recon I boil it on track as the pedal goes oh so soft.

If it is I'll go and get some tonight before Halfords closes (and whilst the wife is away ;) )

Cheers.

Steve

Its not the same stuff but we use the Castorl Response for DOT 4 applicatons and find it works well

Hope this helps

Which one?

I want something suitable for trackdays.

Cheers

They're both the same as far as I can see... I got mine from DT, but it is the same bottle as what comes from Halfords.

They are both DOT 4 so conform to the same regulations.

If you want better stuff with a higher boiling point and less hydroscopic go for DOT 5.1

Bugger it!

I might just buy some Silkolene

Am really hoping the pros can back me up here, but IIRC that is silicone based and not compatible with your current fluid.

Indeed DOT 5 is silicone based and not suitable.

This is what Impreziv motorsport used in there Group N kit. He nicked the idea from Scoobysport who used this (as did I ) in numerous Imprezas across the country.

Steve

Pete at Scoobysport recommended Silkolene dot 4 brake fluid for our Scooby. Seemed to work just fine and I might even have some left over in the garage :D

Chris

Steve,

Just get the Silkolene Pro race and stop fecking about, thats that I used on the black RS.

What Mods Are Worth Doing?

Fluid

Yes, you should upgrade the fluid. It is recommended that you try and use a Super DOT4 fluid. The better ones of these have a slightly lower dry boiling point (5 C) than DOT5, but their wet boiling point is higher. If you go for DOT5 you will find that you need to change the fluid quite regularly (Castrol SRF for eg is about every 10k and at about

Thanks Dad ;)

My original post was posted after reading that and seeing what the local Halfords had in stock.

Steve

You're welcome, Steve. Some members may not have seen that advice in My Performance - but Real Skoda will be pleased to know that you have.

Steve, the top two pics are NOT the same fluid. The Castrol Response DOT 4 and Super DOT 4 look terribly similar but are not the same thing. Get the Super DOT 4 if you're going for the Castrol product - 10 quid a litre from Halfords. Certainly didn't manage to boil mine at Brunters - Badger Bill uses it too.

Yep I agree with what's been said:

Get a Super DOT 4 fluid, most have a similar dry boiling point to the DOT 5 but are far better on the wet boiling point. They also absorb less water so you can stick to the standar 40k change intervals.

My preference is for the Silkoloene (get it from DT using the 10% discount we get) or the Castrol RS Super DOT 4 for similar results, but cheaper.
