felicia 1.3 xli exhaust problems

Featured Replies

hi all..........my r reg felly 1.3 xli is in great nick but the central part of the exhaust is hitting the rear axle when the car is fully loaded.........this is really getting to me and i took it to see kwikfit and national to ask if they couldadjust it for me but they cant be bothered and just want me to buy a new exhaust from them:finger:...is working on the exhaust system beyond the scope of the average D I Yer????? IT LOOKS LIKE I COULD HEAT THE OFFENDING AREA APART AND MOVE IT FORWARD FOR MORE CLEARANCE OVER THE AXLE...HMMM:confused:

ON A LIGHTER NOTE....I HAVE NEVER OWNED A CAR AS ENJOYABLE TO WORK ON AND DRIVE AS THE FELICIA:thumbup:

is it not just the rubber exhaust hanger is worn?

peanuts to buy and easy enough to fit with the aid of a bit of fairy liquid

thanks Harryhill.....i changed all the rubbers on the exhaust and it still hangs too low.....it just needs to be about an inch higher over the rear axle to be ok......its driving me nuts.....lol:)

Maybe remove the section and sort of try and bend it the other way so it sits higher?

THANKS philje123S I THINK I WILL HAVE A GO AT AJUSTING THIS MYSELF.....MY ONLY WORRY IS THAT I OFFERED TO PAY KWIKFIT TO FIX IT AND THEY DIDNT WANT TO TOUCH IT SO IM WORRIED THAT ITS A BUGGER OF A JOB........ IM A REASONABLE THREE SPANNER KIND OF A GUY ......SO THIS IS A GOOD EXCUSE TO GET UNDER THE CAR AGAIN.......

yeah i agree could just be the rubber mine was, had some garage banging my exaust back box and what not saying i needed new exuast (well if he hits it any harder i will do) took it quickfit it had just fallen off the rubber but i did need a new rubber ( so took it to my dad an he fixed my lil problem:D)

You should be OK then, you only need 1 :D

dare I mention 'cable-tie' . Its either that or alot of grief getting it all lined up without an lift ramp....

Yeah, the hard part of exhaust fitting is sorting out the alignment (but you should have guessed that from the issue you've got). ;)

It may be possible to loosen off the clamp(s) at the joint(s) on the offending section and rotate it to get more clearence.

thanks lads.......if i used cable ties on my exhuast is it possible to tie them directly to the metal or will the melt?????i suppose i could use metal tie wire........i thought all the joins were pasted together i didnt know they were clamped.....

Some exhaust mounts look like a figure 8, or a rubber ring. I presume the cable tie suggestions were to tighten these types up, and make the system hang higher.

As to the joints, they're usually made using a smear of Firegum to get a gas seal, and a U-bolt to get a mechanical joint that stops the system pulling apart. It can take a fair bit of effort to get the now rusty nuts moving again to adjust the system.

I'd not use nylon tiewraps directly on the exhaust in case it gets hot enoug to melt them. Certainly the downpipe can get hot enough to melt PVC (and stink the interior when you get a bag in the wrong place).
