diesel power tuning boxes

Featured Replies

hi anyone have any experience of diesel power tuning boxes on a 2 ltr pd engine?

A friend at work has a Bluefin on what was a 140bhp Audi A4. Says its excellent! I also have one on my petrol VRs and would agree, its very good indeed (although if yourfront tyre tread is low then traction can be an issue).

ATB, Jon.

If its a digital tuning box its ok.

There are many threads on here about them if you use the search facility:thumbup:

In my experience (I've tested 4 or 5 tuning boxes now) there is very little difference between a digital and an analogue tuning box and I'd probably not pay the extra for digital again. Not run one on a 2.0 PD engine unfortunately though :o

Your mileage may vary as they say :D

Hi Everyone this is my first post on this forum. I thought I would shove my two penneth in on the difference between Analogue and Digital tuning boxes.

My understanding is that analogue boxes consist of resistors to con the ECU into thinking that the air being taken into the engine is colder than it actually is.

Cold air is denser than warm air, therefore to ensure the correct air to fuel mix ratio the ECU injects more fuel when it thinks that the air taken into the engine is cold.

The extra rich mixture in warm conditions caused by the analogue tuning box conning the ECU gives you increased performance from the engine.

The digital tuning boxes consist of a second ECU which connects to the fuel systems and provides a more aggressive map to inject more fuel when the engine is under load.

While the short term performance gain between the two methods may be similar the analogue tuning method is quite crude and can result in too richer mixture entering the engine under certain conditions. The result of this is that some of the fuel is only partly combusted due to lack of O2, which results in more carbon monoxide and soot being generated in the engine.

Over time the extra soot can accumulate in the turbo charger and eventually cause the turbo to fail. Therefore IMHO the digital box is well worth the extra money when weighed against the cost of replacing a failed turbo.

I've tried both and the digital wins every time as it produces less soot than the resistor unit. You only seem to get black smoke when the engine is under full load with a digi box

The analogue units can throw up engine faults easier than the digital units.

The difference between the two systems has been well documented in the past.

Usual story - horses for courses

The digital tuning boxes consist of a second ECU which connects to the fuel systems and provides a more aggressive map to inject more fuel when the engine is under load.

Out of interest, how does the box know the engine is under load? On the Mondeo, both my analogue and digital tuning boxes connected to the common rail sensor so all either of them could do is adjust the voltage on the rail (by varying resistance with the box?)?

Interestingly I didn't get any smoke/soot under acceleration with either and both were just as competent at triggering the CEL when turned up to da max!

Chris

Where can one find these Digital Tuning Boxes?... :D

Or this, not a box in itself. Just a program you enter into the ECU through the diagnostic outlet.

I bought a "EVRY" to my 2008 Octavia 2.0 140hp BKD.

It gave a nice effect to driving and car is more responsive and better to drive.

Computer shows that fuel usage went down ~0.7-0.8Liters/100km but actual measured did not cahnge at all.. so it must inject a little more with part throttle.

This thing is analog and includes only one resistor inside.

It tells the ECU that diesel is 129.6Celsius degreed warm and ECU compensates injection quantity to keep the injected mass same (beliewing that diesel is expanded due heat).

Okay, so I went to dyno.. 2hp and 10nm was the result with two pulls comparison.

Actually that was the same amount of power which I dynoed from the car when it was 3000km driven. Now it has 11000km:s.

My friens have used EVRY mod with success and they have been seeing ~15hp/40nm from 1.9L engines.. maby these new engines have more restrictive smoke map to reduce tricking possibilities =(

Anyways it had 160hp/360nm as stock, so I am pretty happy with that.

These are really cheap at ebay, but if power increase is the goal, better to go with smarter box which widens injection duration at higher rpms or even better would be custom made chip.

"bulk chips" cause only pain, I would recommend to avoid them =(

The PD digi box plugs into the wiring loom that runs from the ECU to the PD units. Presumably it looks at the injector opening pulse times and widens them proportionally with engine load (more load equals longer injector times).

The PD certainly doesn't smoke at all off load but likes to puff when accelerating hard.

IMHO the analogue resistor type PD boxes are dreadful as they just overfuel like a pig under all engine loads.

As an aside, the Digi box I had on my old 2.2 CR Primera also plugged into the CR pressure transducer which fooled the ECU into thinking the rail pressure was lower than it was thus increasing the pressure slightly.

Obviously this means more fuel per injector opening = more performance. I over adjusted mine somewhat making the engine cut out with a rail over pressure fault :D

With Dragon it pays to make them an offer :D ...i.e. I have seen your digital tuning boxes on e-bay going for £150.....if I could purchase one direct from you would you accept the same amount.....

It does work a lot of the time

I had one of those diesel power tuning boxes fitted at the beginning of the year and it's been one of the best things i bought for my car :D

i paid arond £270 for it and they fitted it in half an hour, the fuel economy and general performance of the car is fantastic

The chap at the garage said they were developing them so that you could choose where you wanted your powerto come in, at the beginning, middle or the end of the range.

He also said they were trying to get it so that you get no extra power gains but extra economy gains not sure how that works though

The tuning boxes have become quite sophisticated of late.

There is still that never ending debate of tuning box vs. remap.

But as far as an untraceable mod goes, a tuning box cannot be beaten IMO.

Thats why i chose a tuning box over a remap

Ive put a dragon box on my car straight after its first service with the intention of getting a remap when the warranty ran out.

Now the warranty has just ran out,im keeping the Dbox on because it will be easier to sell an unmapped car car when i get shut of it

I went for a DPT box. Economy has improved but Ive not done enough miles with it to give an accurate figure but its between 2 and 4 mpg. Much smoother at lower engine speeds (sub 2000 rpm). Improved mid range acceleration:

40-80 in 4th 9.06 sec

50-70 in 4th 4.45 sec

50-70 in 5th 5.85 sec

Ive no idea how these figures compare with other cars except they are better than those quoted for a Golf V GTI.

Reducing the power boost (by rotating one of the 3 screws as directed by manufacturer in Netherlands) at higher revs, significantly improves economy but is obviously less fun.

So you went for it then - looks like you pretty much agree with my findings. If you need to reinsure, I'd recommend the insurance link to Advance on the DPT site - they've negotiated a no-loading arrangement with Zurich which is vey competitive.

Thanks for that info. Im currently with Sainsburys car insurance - I pay £360 for me and the wife. They added £50 on to that for the DPT. I asked around but all quoted higher in the first place which put the total cost up despite some not adding as much for the DPT. I 'll give Advance a go.

So where are these three screws and how do they work? I can't see anything obvious on mine, and the guy who fitted it told me that there wasn't a facility for user adjustment. I'd be interested to know what the Dutch supplier told you.

I had the DPT installed by the nearest installer (Diamond Performance) as it cost no more then doing it myself. However Craig had not done a Octy 2 VRS TDI before. I was disappointed with the lack of extra torque/acceleration higher up the rpm scale so he rang the Netherlands and rang me back to advise turning the RH screw 2 full turns clockwise. The screws are under the sticker. I dont know what they do exactly but maybe they adjust fueling over different rpm ranges.

Result took 0.6 sec off 40-80 in 4th. No smoke and no DPF lights.

Ive just been out and got some pics of my DPT installation for you. Its wedged in the battery box out of sight.

I also have one of these in my L&K 2.0PD TDI. I'm constantly backing off on the throttle now. I have not measured any acceleration times, but it feels quicker. I have a separate fuse so I can disable it at any time. Very impressed. I took insurance with Advance/Zurich as well. cost is less than what I paid for my 530d before it, but this is 7 years younger & worth a lot more.
