whislting - turbo on its way out?

Featured Replies

Hiya Guys after much reading on the good old KKK turbos mine over the last week has developed a whislte on tickover

i have a custom remapp and everything else is standard, i know about the turbo whislte when revving and driving and a little when on tickover but its got louder, really loud,

berst way to discribe it is:

imagine you are indoors and outside you can hear someone vacuming their car, its that sort of whislte really high pitched when its sat at idle,

when you rev it you get normal whislte with the spooling,

just after some comfort that my KKK aint going to die,

thanks

Rob

i get whistle at idle

They all whistle

but that loud and it didnt do it before?????

Mine started to sound like an air raid siren just before it died!!

They do whistle on tickover after a delay, you can hear it spooling up on it's own but it doesn't seem as loud as you are experiencing?

The nut at the end of the shaft sheared off and it sucked it in and POP!!

hmmm a little worrying,

no where near as loud as an air raid siren thou

Mine does that. I did wonder if it was normal

It's the auxiliary air pump or something like that...

what does this do?

just noticed you not too far from me, i work in northwich and live in stoke if you only in cheshire

It sounds like the turbo spooling up for a short period of time then it backs off?

If it's a cold day, you can see the exhaust gas speed increase while it's 'whistling' then it backs off to normal.

Perhaps it's the VNT blades moving inside which will make it spin faster, perhaps it's something to do with the emissions at low revs???

Perhaps....perhaps.....it's all speculation :D hopefully somebody will be along and help us?

As I say, I've heard it's the auxiliary air pump, which AIUI supplys the compressed air 'spark' for ignition until the engine's been running long / fast enough to supply its own air. But, as is often the case, I could be wrong...:D

As for location, I'm up the other end of Cheshire from you - work outside Warrington, and live not far from Marple. But I reckon you'll find quite a few members closer to you than that...

Mine will only do it after about 10 mins after starting.

Deffo the turbo doing somethign though as the noise will stop if you blip the pedal.

The piston will compress the air enough to cause combustion after starting.

When it's cold, ther engine note will change slightly after a few mins, sounds like some kind of overfueling in the cold weather.

mine is the same, no noise until its warmed up, but does stop if you blip the throttle,

my mate who rebuilds skylines for a living says its unusual but doesn't sound bad?

Hi Bobjim I live in Stoke if you want to comapre it to a standard one. Mine does do it but have got use to it.

where abouts are you mcscooby, i live in newcastle now, stoke=newcastle all the same, ha ha

I am ok when mine starts doing it - usually driving in hilly places. Seems to kick in when there is a load on the engine, and the power appears to increase. Kind of like a sports button. Did it since new - 70k now with no problems.
