New PC set up queries

Featured Replies

OK guys four quick easy questions as I’ve just got and been setting up a new computer (Intel Dual Core, 2Mb Ram etc…)

Firstly I put a CD writer in my old machine (don’t ask how old but it is still running Windows 98 (not even SE!) and used to use Nero 6 for burning CD’s etc. I specced the new one with a SATA DVD RW drive (Toshiber Speed Writemaster I think it is) so will Nero 6 cope with the new drive and DVD’s in he same way as CD’s (eg allow multi session disks which I find extremely useful for backing up photos – I have no manual)

Secondly I also have another DVD RW drive I bought for my sister but never installed in her machine and it came with a Cyberlink PowerDVD 5 CD on it (I think it was also a Toshiba Samsung Writemaster). Does anyone know what this software is and whether it is likely to work with the new drive?

Thirdly I’m going to put the hard drive out of my old machine into the new one to allow me to copy files across and also to use it as another (small) back-up storage for photos. I presume that if I set the jumpers to slave and plug it in it will be OK and the machine won’t boot from it? And that after that I can then copy files across and then re-format the drive.

Finally I've always used AVG antivirus and have installed this on the new machine etc. It all seems to work fine except for the auto updates which are scheduled OK and seem to cause the modem to crash when they try to work (modem works fine otherwise and at other times) so any thoughts?

You'll need Nero 8 if the new PC is running Vista Mark...

I'll try to answer your other questions over email ;)

Cheers Steve - PS forgot to say I avoided Vista and went for XP (Old camera and printer software that we like, was OK with XP but not necessarily with Vista, and didn't want to change)

I'd use kasperski over AVG myself but I think you needed Nero 7 for XP if you wanted it to play nice.

I'd jus tpop out and buy 8 myself and be done with it.

Try this

AShampoo Burning Studio 6.6 free

Ashampoo Burning Studio Free - Reviews and free Ashampoo Burning Studio Free downloads at Download.com

I use this at home. If you don't need the fancy features of Nero why pay?

Your old hard drive will work fine as a slave. Why not stick it in a caddy and make a removable storage device?

Sumvision 3.5" USB2.0 Black Hard Drive Enclosure for upto 750GB IDE Hard Drives - Retail - Ebuyer

If AVG is giving trouble you could try Avast. It's also free.

i use Nero 8 on XP and get no problems, i used roxio 6 but it just stopped working. no idea why. tried to update it but wouldnt, would detect my drives at first and burn fine but when the PC Reset\Shutdown, it wouldnt detect the drives  gave up and "brought" nero.
