Positioning my Router ????

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just thought I'd have a play at repositioning the DG834PN wireless router and it seems better when it's upstairs in the spare bedroom rather than downstairs on top of the bookcase even though the laptops are mostly used downstairs???

Does anybody else have the router upstairs at all? just wondered really as it may be better to run a cable up stairs permanently??

It seems better as I'm not too close too it as I'm usually only a few feet away from it? Does being a bit farther away help? the computer says that the signal is still 54MBps??

Just wondered what other people did?

Ben

My Belkin router is upstairs and a flawless connection to 3 x laptops in use downstairs signal strength excellent.

Ours is upstairs in the spare bedroom too, and we never have any real problems. I think it may be down to what walls are load-bearing, as our living room is directly below the spare room, and the study is separated by two stud walls only (although the bathroom tiling and the cupboards between the dongle and the router sometime make the bit-rate drop to 36kbps).

In the hall, where we first had it set up, the reception was rubbish, and I reckon it's cos' most of the walls surrounding the hall are load-bearing and so made of brick, not stud...?

It shouldn't really make a lot of difference unless you have a lot of metalwork in your walls.

I used wireless at my old work and we had a usable signal through 3 feet of sandstone.

You don't ever know what is going on around your house. You could have neighbours with equipment on the same frequency interfering with the signal making peaks and troughs.

Wifi is a bit of a black art. Try moving it around even just a few feet. It can make a difference.

Thanks, I think I'll run a cable permanently then, gets it out of the sitting room.

I have my vigor 2800 in the loft at the top of the house (3 story) and I still get a signal downstairs in the kitchen. Having the router in the loft means it is much closer to the master socket then anywhere else in the house.

General concensus seems to be to mount the router as high as possible, so upstairs is ideal. I guess it has something to do with the radio waves.

Ok, I think I'll do that then.
