Resonating sound from engine

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 1.6 FSI 05 Octy II and I've had this problem for a few months now, it's one of things that you know it's there but you just put up with it.

When I'm slowing down or coming to a stop at approx 1500 rpm I get this sound from the engine that sounds like something is either vibrating or resonating inside. It's quite noticable especially when you are driving round NCP's.

I've looked under the car and could not see anything and also under the bonnet no clues there.

I've taken to my local dealer and took one of the engineers out and his words were "hmm never heard that one before we will have to take a look."

They had a look and they said that they adjusted the exhaust heat shield and which I thought was fair enough but when I drove it home it was still doing it.

As you do I decided that I would leave it for a while and put up with it. Anyway the car was due for it first MOT and I took it to a garage round the corner from me and asked them to have a look. When I came to collect it the chap said that he had found the problem but it was a real pain to find. What I can remember he said was that the box that contains the air filter has a flap? of some sort and when the engine gets warm it starts to vibrate/resonate.

What I want to know from the community is what he said correct, and and now I know what the problem is can I take it back to the dealer and get it replaced under warranty? I bought the car in October 06

Thanks for your time.

Couple of things it can be

Air intake pipe at the front of the engine cover (most likely)

Engine ECU bracket vibrates under the scuttle trim

My '05 plate 1.9TDI has developed exactly the same symptom in the last few months. A resonant vibration around 1500 most noticable as the revs drop through that range as I slow in crawling in traffic in first gear. It's annoying me and my warranty is up in 7 weeks so I'm very keen to hear how you get on.

Interesting. Cheers. Am I right in thinking there was a TSB for the fuel filter vibrating? what was the fix for that?

Yep no probs I will let you know the outcome. I'm on leave the week after next so will try and book it in then.

Lummox are those items you mentioned qualify for warranty repair?

Yes there was a TSB for the fuel filter vibrating ont he diesels. This has been sorted by a one piece fuel filter housing in production. Fitting felt tape to the slots will sort out one that does rattle.

I would say the rattle should be a warranty item. Usually the front part of the air filter that bolts up to the slam panel has a top hat section, this comes loose and vibrates.

Cheers for that Lummox, hopefully what you mentioned will do the trick and I'll have a nice quiet car again.

Hi there,

Just to update on the noise that I've been having. Took the car to the dealer and took the engineer out and again he said that it might be something to do with the exhaust but I had to correct and tell him that it wasn't.

Anyway they called me later in the afternoon saying that they had cured the problem.

On the report sheet they give you after having work done this is what is says :-

"Checked for vibration, coming from front of air box to heat exchanger, removed it and re-fixed with trim and sealant. Carried out road test."

As I drove home there was no noise and it was completed under warranty.

wega3k, I read your other thread, hope all goes well tomorrow with your probs.

Thanks for updating us to let us know its been fixed

Yes, interesting because my '07 octavia vRS has had this same buzzing sound at exactly 1500rpm since it was brand new. I don't notice it when driving because the rattly rear seat catch drowns it :( but it's quite noticeable when holding the engine at 1500rpm. It's due a service but that's another crock 'o shyte.

Although mine was actually at 1100 RPM (thought it was higher), this was where the noise was coming from on mine too. Fixed with a bit of foam!

Glad it's all sorted now. Happy to be of service.

Hi. My car is out of warranty but this seems to be the noise I have complained of for a few months (just after warranty expired luck would have it). Does anyone have a guide for a DIY fix? The noise is rather irritating and often turns heads for all the wrong reasons when driving slowly through town.

Fixed mine myself - lift the bonnet, where the air intake hole is as you look at the front of the car, the point where it meets the metal panel, mine was rattling against that panel. Simple solution, picec of foam rubber fastened in place with a plastic bag tie and presto!!

streety can you pls post some pictures so we can see exactly how it looks?

Franek,

As requested - no more rattle from mine! I assume the air intake is the same for all Octavia's ( mines a 4x4 )

Yes, I know those of you who show your engines off would want a tidier job:eek:, but the principals the same!!!!

21102.attach

21103.attach

Streety,

thanks a lot for picts, will try that.

Welcome

Engine ECU bracket vibrates under the scuttle trim

Hi,

I've got an 2008 Octavia 1.6FSi the annoying rattle started a month or so ago. Obviously my car is still under warranty and I'd prefer them to sort it out. I've already asked them to have a look when it went in for it's first service last month, they didn't find anything.

But this sounds like exactly the same problem I'm having. I'd like to identify exactly which of the two problems it is before I book it in.

I know where the air intake pipe pipe is from the photos later in this thread, but where is the Engine ECU bracket, and what is a scuttle trim.

I'd appreciate any help.

Cheers
