Hi mate, the D80 is a better camera then the D40 and D40x, take a look at the new D60 as that maybe a better compromise?

I have a D40 and it is an excellent starter DSLR, I've had it nor about 8 months and it has been very good. Once I get better with the controls I will buy myself a D200.

hi, i have a D80 and my own photography business, and i get all the quality i need from it!! great camera and not bad price either,, way cheaper than the D300! :D

Its the lenses that make the difference to picture quality as much as the camera though.

I've had a D40 since last August and am seriously impressed with it.

As said above, there is no AF motor in the camera body (it's in the lens) and so any lens you buy needs to be an AF-S lens otherwise you have to focus manually. I haven't found this to be a problem though; I've recently bought a new telephoto lens (not by Nikon) and had the AF-S motor fitted and the pic quality is great.

I take pics of a range of subjects from flowers to motorsport and not had any problems with it at all. No plans to upgrade yet.
