confused - is a 110bhp 2001 TDi a PD or not?

Featured Replies

Lookign around the various threads on diesels there's been a posting saying that the 110 bhp TDi diesel is not a PD engine.

Is this correct and should I be wary of going for the older style of diesel?

thanks for any help, L

No it isnt a PD but there is nowt wrong with the non PD engines, still pull well and are a tough as old boots.

wasnt this a pre PD engine ?

ok, is there anything in particular that needs checking before buying a non-PD engine?

Both engines were used along side one another for a while before the injection pump diesel finnaly gave way to an all PD layout (with the exception of the aging 2.5 Superb).

Nothing out of the ordinary needs checking. Hot and cold starting, glow plug light goes on and goes off as it should. Excessive smoke, lack of power, odd noises the usual.

Service history is pretty important. Far to many fuel filters get left to long. Big killer for the pump. Usually water in the fuel will collect in the bottom of the pump as it seperates from the diesel and it corrodes the metering unit in the bottom of the pump itself, fairly expensive repair. Seen it happen a few times but like I said only on neglected cars. Used to see a fair few of these at 250k+ miles.

Non PD engine is probaly the better bet, the PD ares quieter but alot more expensive if the common rail or other conponents fail.

the pd's dont have a high pressure rail, they are individual injectors under pressure. but yer very expensive when they go wrong.

Rarely go wrong and the lump is a very stong one, i run 230bhp through my pd130 and its still going strong. Runs off to touch wood ;)
