I have a 2004 Mk1 vrs estate with the roof rails already fitted but I have an idea that I want some advice on. I bought my little lad a quad bike, an electric but with the same speed and size of medium size childrens one. I orignally bought an estate to put in the boot but its is marginally too long so I need another plan. I am thinking of putting it on a roof rack, but the quad weighs around 75kg, maybe a bit less if I removed the battery.

So how much weight can I put on the roof rails without worry of it all collapsing whilst driving?

I think 75kg is pretty much the most you're allowed on a roofrack by law, regardless of what it will actually cope with...

How about a little trailer instead... would save lifting 12 stone of quad bike onto the roof....

That would be cool, but maybe slighty risky having my 7 year old steer it on!! I was thinking about using two thin ramps and walking it up.

75kg is abit much to lift to the height of a car roof but where theres a will, theres a way!

Could you perhaps drop one of the rear seats and get the quad in the back that way ? The estate (I also have a vRS of similar age) has load hooks on the boot floor and walls that could be used to restrain the whole thing.

can't drop the seats as both my little lads like to come along! Its either the roof or tie the boot lid closed.....
