Sunroof not closing

Featured Replies

Had another test-drive tonight, car was much better than the last one.

Main concern was the sunroof. It opened fine but when I tried to close it it got to about 3" from closed and then opened itself again

Presume it's an anti-trap sensor playing up, How easy is it to fix this?

Cheers, Andrew

just check the runners are all clear etc, not sure about replacing sensors.

runners were clear, small amount of clean grease on them but that was all.

The guy selling it eventually managed to close it by forcing it closed as it got to the 'sticky' bit.

Before I go ahead with the purchase I need to know if it's a big problem to get it sorted?

I have never heard of a sunroof not closing on an Octy. I would get a quote from a dealer for the price of fixing it, and get the chap to knock that off the asking price.

i guess to fix it / play with it you would have to drop the roof lining?

I had to fix a manual slide and tilt sunroof on a VW I owned once due to the local VW dealer being on strike. It was an absolute nightmare to get it to close fully and flush, and it is not something I would ever attempt again. Make sure it is fixed by someone who knows what they are doing, ie a dealer or VAG specialist, before buying the car.

I have come across this before, there is a plastic part in the mechanism which can come out of place and get caught.

any idea how to fix this?

Posted that at lunchtime so time was short. There is a plastic cover on each side that covers the cable. The cable is like an old fashioned window winder cable where the metal cog on the motor grips it and pulls the cable which is attached to the roof. What happens is that this cover rucks up, deforms and ends up getting in the way. There are basically 3 choices, 1 have it replaced by a sunroof specialist. 2 Try and straighten it out and hope it doesn't happen again 3 Cut the bent bit of plastic off and throw it away.

This may not be the problem, have someone operate the roof while you carefully look from above to see where it is jamming - mind your fingers.

there's nothing visible jamming. We did notice that sometimes it stopped 3" away from closed, sometimes 4-5" away from closed.

can't really go and pull the guy's car apart before we buy it and I don't want to buy it without knowing what the exact problem is. Catch 22

Use it as a lever to get the price down, that way you'll have some money in the budget to get it fixed.
