20 MPG Town Driving :( HELP

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am getting less then 25 MP when driving in town and I dont understand why.

I keep the speedo around the 2K limit and favour high gears to low gears.

My tyres are pumped up to 34 psi.

What else can I be doing to get better MPG?

Is this a 1.4 MPI by any chance?

If so,

check

- Temp Sensor

get it VAG-COMed to see if there are any fault codes

Martin

P.S. the 1.4MPI is lousy at best for MPG... I only average 28-35..... how many miles are you getting for a brimmed tank?

Hi,

Yes its a 1.4mpi - I get maximum 220 miles from a full tank which is not a lot

Hi all

We have a 1.2 12v fabia which is only giving us 35ish to the gallon no matter what kind of driving it gets. Surely this can't be right?

Any input or thoughts would be appreciated as we're almost at the point of selling her and going back to an oil burner!

Ouch... I get 300+ from a tank.. that needs booking into a garage to look at some of those sensors.

The Furby's a heavy little bugga and it's a wee engine, So it's working hard for it's keep

That's what I was getting from my mpi

Changed the oxygen sensor and now it's much better. There was not fault code or warning, just changed it because I know that they gradually degrade and the car runs richer than it should.

Get it from the right source, and it will pay for itself within months.

Are you sure that the oxygen sensor will impact this?

I ve been reading around the forum and dont see any mention of this

There's definately something wrong , I get an easy 35 mpg (trip comp miles!) in my 1.4 mpi in town driving , it only ever dips below that if ive been stuck in summer tourist-ey traffic jams.

My 1.4 16v gets about 320-340 miles to a tank.

I got mine from lambdasensor.co.uk (or something similar)

The non-OEM sensor worked just fine, cheap too.

I fitted myself, it's a simple job if you know your way around cars, otherwise you'd need to have a friend (or garage) do it for you. Best is to use the special oxygen sensor socket that is open to the side.

Mpg has improved considerably, from embarassingly bad it now is just annoying (I would really expect 40-50mpg easily from such a small car:finger:)

It is now doing around 100 extra miles to the tank, so the difference is considerable.
