front shocks

Featured Replies

How much are a pair of front shock absorbers.

I have a feeling mine will need replacing soon.

I might as Kwik Fit for a quote as I can get a discount there, or am I best off getting them myself?

Its going to be £86 quid each side for shocks and fitting at kwik fit even with my discount card.

Each side, ouch. Makes Jorily's £30 shocks +£6 postage £72 + £12 for spring compressors £84 for both sides (+£19 for haynes if not got one) and a day's work sound worth it. Might also be needing a couple of nuts/bolts of appropriate sizes from skoda dealers couple of quid. Top spring cups probably worth getting as well, should only be a couple of quid.

Never touched the front shocks myself. But where the shocks bolt on at the bottom doesn't look particularly pleasant to undo. Also I am not sure if the big nuts hold the spring in, i.e. you need to put the spring compressors on to springs while on the car.

Have you tried Butts Of Bawtry

They hace Skoda parts quite cheap

Yeah thats the thread that got me slightly worried as mine appear to be rusting so replacements seems imminent!!

Butts are a waste of space , never phone you back , never have anything on stock thase days, no cheaper than anywhere else and dont specialise in Skoda any more

Try Graham at Jorily

just to balance thing up a little. butts have always been really good for me, mind you i never bank on people phoning me back.

as for time, it can be done in a couple of hours. its only 3 bolts a side to get them out.

took me a morning to do both sides, bottom strut clamp bolts looked like a total bitch but nothing that an impact wrench and a 4ft long breaker bar could not handle. good job i had the foresight to get some new bolts+nuts :)

The real pig was keeping the springs compressed without the compressors. about 50 cable ties per spring sorted that out :o

All in all it cost me £34 per shock (KRG premium no less), £1 tub of grease, a new 16mm impact socket, lots of plus gas, and £4.50 per side for the upper rubber mounts.

a little hint - after youve changed them paint the clamp bolts and nuts with some think tarry underseal. it may be gunky, but it stops them going rusty and seizing up in the future!

 that's a fanastic idea, there's also an aerosol you can get called toolguard which does the trick

I have always had excellent service from them

I have dealt with them for many many years

But I have called them and unfortunately they are not specialising in Skoda now and when everything is sold they will not be replacing stock

So may be a bargain or 2 there

I had Kwik Fit do them today with the tracking as the left wheel was wearing on the edges.

The left shock was also rusted through and was on the verge of failing.

Kwik Fit charged me £75 per side (same as my local dealer) and £25 for the tracking.

Also showed me what the knocking noise was.

Theres too much play in the engine/gearbox mount thats under the car.

Nice one

Glad to know that it all came good for you

I did use to see quite a few of these at the dealers

One went in to the tyre and gave it a blow out

Not a common thing for it to do that , but at lease you got it sorted before that happened

Nice one

What is Tarry underseal?

Thanks Awesome Sarah. I had noticed them becoming rusty and am glad I took the time to have them inspected. If one failed on the Sunday Skoda meet that would be disasterous.

Isnt the underseal the tacky yucky stuff that they paint to the underside of the car

Looks like black tar?

Sarah

Oh no probs , cant go missing a meet ;)

Sarah

the mount thats giving you trouble..... is it the pendulum one on the bottom of the gearbox or the big "square box in a hole" one on the right hand side of the chassis (as you look from the front) just to the left of the wheel arch?
