Just got a call from the skoda garage that they have snapped the locking wheel nut key and the nuts are on too tight and cant be removed with it

They said they want £170 to remove them which I have just given them the go ahead the thing that worries me is they said its possible that the wheels might get damaged (vrs alloys) and the hubs might need replacing if the worst comes to the worst.

Anyone know what the likelyhood of the damage caused will be?

..Dawm thing only went in for an MOT and front bushes! wouldnt care I asked the tyre fitter to take care putting the wheel nuts on!.

Maybe telling him to be careful was like a red rag to a bull. No excuse for it, though! :thumbdwn:

I imagine they'll either drill out the bolts or try heating the hub with a blowtorch, which is why they've been indemnifying themselves to the hilt... :(

its the second time this has happened 1st by quickfit and the 2nd by independent tyre monkey

Doesn't sound very alloy wheel friendly they needed a refurb but don't think ill be affording that for a while now.

yeah quickfit are poop they overtigthen the nuts, i told them they dont need to be that tight but he insisted they did, so as soon as i got outside i losened the nuts,

Guess I better get some new locking wheel nuts Mcguard still the best ones to go for?

Cannot believe my luck with cars! how hard can it be to correctly fit a locking wheel nut!

If they snapped the nut/socket, ask for it back and see if you can see any markings sugesting an air rachet (which should NOT be used for this very reason).

If they have, they can pay.

Theres NO way it costs £170 to get a nut off, not even at £50ph.

Ive got a snap-on socket ro remove snapped bolts/studs, and i paid about £36inc. vat.

TBH if they snapped the bolts and you haven't done anything on them I would think one of the two garages could have a liability if you could prove this.

£170 seems a hell of a lot as a wheel would be less than £100 and they could `just` cut the old wheel and then remove the thread by turning after welding something onto it.

locking wheels nuts are easy removed, and why would you want locking wheel nuts on a car, they are just pure bad news. only one thing for lockin wheel nuts is the skip.

slacken the other 4 nuts of the rim, not right off the rim just a few threads, and with the locking wheel nut at the top of the rim hit the tyre with a sledge hammer if you have low profile tyres just a bit of timber at the top of the rim,

this should break the seal of the alloy and nut, if they are the rotating one big chisel and hammer, if they are like torx or spline, find a bit of steel rod to big to fit and heat it with the burners and sledge it in to it, all these methods have got me out of hanulins before.

Yeah, do this is a good idea, just be abit careful.

Think ill be not putting them back on £35 Locking wheel nuts + £170 to remove them ..It would of been cheaper if they had been nicked!

Doesn't look like it because if you had it could have saved you £170, this has been posted twice in the last 6 months IIRC.

It's a simple process remving these bolts (Probably too simple) and if your careful you wont damage your wheels especially as there are no sledgehammers involved . Go to Halfords/Motorworld/Many other motorfactors and buy a Laser Locking wheelnut removal socket (They come in pairs and are around £15). You need a 1/2" ratchet and extension and you just wind it onto the bolt and remove it. You then need a mole grips/vice to detatch the socket from the bolt and the bolt is destroyed in the process. You then fit new bolts (Halfords/Motorworld/Many other motorfactors)

Takes about an hour to do all four and refit the new bolts.

I doubt you will get one of them to work on a McGuard locking wheel bolt in a Fabia vRS alloy. The recess in which the bolt sits is just to small and you cant get anything but a very thin walled socket down the sides of them. Last set I did I had to drill them out which took ages. Zero damage to the wheels though.

Had to use them twice on my VRS. First time was when I lost the key, the second time was when the Ball and Chain lost the key. It is a challange to get it lined up right so it doesn't catch but it can be done.

OK fair enough. I know they work on the std ones but hadnt tried on McGuards.

Girlfriend got an update from the dealer today

Apparently they sent the car away to somewhere to get the locking wheel nuts "lazered" off they said they got them off but one or more alloys have been scratched.

Also they are replacing the suspension bushes she got a call to say the car will have to stay in as it keeps splitting bushes

Really getting annoyed now ..Lazering wheel nuts off are they high?!

If it keeps splitting the plastic bushes then usually they havent cleaned enough of the corrosion/furr that builds up on the inside of the console.

they snapped the key bro not your problem ive worked with kwikfit before and they do some bull s***ing like they log you reg and when you do ur pads once if you car pass's through again the recomend disk needed doing. can you just get a new key the no. should be on the wraper. what kind of lasers makes scratch's get it out of there i got a rear hub for £50
