Hi Steve,

try 'boroskoda' on ebay, or call him (Chris) on 01733 324251.He's a Skoda specialist with over 20 years experience and will tell you exactly what the problem is and most probably have what you need in stock.

I had a 95 M reg GLXie, loved it to bits, sea green metallic.Thrashed the pants off it and it never ever let me down.

Speedo cable gone by the sounds of it. The speedo cable goes from the top of the transmission to the back of the instrument panel.

Firstly check that the cable is not kinked and is routed as far as reasonably possible away from the exhaust manifold at the back of the engine. Unscrew at the transmision end, pull the inner cable out a little and spray some WD40 down the end of it and try to turn it around. This should make the speedo move, as it's mechanical no key needed in ignition so get a friend to check.

If that doesn't work, you're going to have to remove the instrument panel whatever you do, so I recommend to remove that. Instructions in Haynes manual, but pretty easy to do anyway. Will help access if you undo speedo cable in engine bay so it can be pulled through to give more space to unscrew it at back of panel and disconnect everything.

When you have the instrument panel out, at the back of the speedo, if you spin the little thing at the furthest point back (can't remember which direction) but if you try flick it as fast as you can, it should make the speedo move slightly. If it does this, the cable or speedo drive gear is the likely culprit.

You can pull speedo cable through to passenger compartment, it's just held in with a rubber grommet thingy so just pushes in and out (at least that's the theory). If you spin one end, the other should move in unison.

I would try Jorily Skoda on Ebay, his contact details etc are here eBay UK Shop - Jorily Skoda: Estelle Rapid, Felicia, Favorit

More like the speedo head has packed up

I'd say it's the head. If the cable goes, the speedo and odometer both stop together.
