Heath Robinson trackday camera mounts

Featured Replies

Who's got one?

We have a few semi decent digital cameras knocking about the hous as well as a pretty good Fujifilm finepix S4200 which will record 720p at 30fps. http://www.jessops.c...html?cm_vc=PPZ1

That will be ample for trackday footage but I needto fashion some sort of mount to hold it between the two headrests.

Anyone attempted this?

I'm not keen on wasting further money on a gopro camera kit that will achieve the same.

Cheers

Simon with a mk1 vRS Fab made up a mount by making two holes in a piece of wood and slotting it between the headrest and seat, then fitted the camera to the end so the camera was in the miiddle between the seats.

Seems to work well. :)

In fact I actually prefer this view to the usual GoPro/drive recorder where all you see is a little bit of bonnet.

I want a mount in this position in the Citigo!

This is exactly what I used to have

And at one point I had Chris (Ellis) make up a metal bracket for a bullit cam

who's eating the crisps in that video?

I made a mount in exactly the same way for the Briskoda/Old Skool trackday at Bruntingthorpe back in 2005, and used it at Snetterton also in my old WRC.

Yep, just used a piece of wood with 2 holes for the headrest posts to slot through.

I've since modified it slightly, with a vertical piece that extends down to the transmission tunnel. Eliminates most of that annoying wobble. I usually use a couple of bungees too just for extra security.

Got a better camera too since, half the rattle is from the extendible lens on a digital camera that you wouldn't get with say a GoPro, but I think the quality is good enough and you dont 'have' to spend out to get some decent quality footage.

I think this POV is best, as you can see the driver working away in the office ;)

Be interesting to see how we could make one work in the Citigo at Combe Richard. Though it depends what seats you plump for!

Without wanting to be flash, I was going to get Jabbasport to make up a custom fitting on the internal cage.

As said, I really like the POV from your videos and will be (shamelessly) copying it so you can see the frantic action going on in the car! :D

Oh that's ok, it needs to be in for Combe, that's the main thing! Hopefully the car will be there too ;)

Cheers guys. think ill be going with this design.

Parts required

1 x length of 20mm square ali bar stock

2 x M15 'U' bolts

4 x M6 wing nuts to suit U bolts

1 x M6 40mm bolt

1 x small length of 6mm poly pipe

2 x 20mm square rubber end bungs

1 x mini camera tripod ball mount

First step was to cut the bar stock to length, i got the bar from B&Q and it comes as a 1 metre length and handily i found that 500mm seems to be the perfect length for the mount so it was cut in half (leaves enough over to make another mount too!)

Then got all the other bits and bobs ready...

M15 U bolts and wingnuts..

20mm end bungs..

mount3.jpg

Mini tripod ball mount (removeable type required that has screw thread fixing in base)..

Length of 6mm Poly pipe

Once the bar was cut to length i offered it up to the headrest tubes to mark the position of the 'U' bolts mounting holes, the final position of the camera mount was marked on the end of the bar by halfing the distance between the 2 headrests so that the camera will sit as central as possible..

Bar was then drilled for the 'U' bolts and for the camera mount (7mm drill for clearance on the U bolts and M6 bolt for ball head hole - my particular mount had a square base so needed a 10mm hole on the top side of the bar)

Quick lick of paint with some black matt plasticote i had lying around leaves this...

mount7.jpg

Small lengths of poly pipe cut to size and slipped onto U bolts to help them grip the headrest tubes and cut down on vibration...

Then all the bits assembled ready for fitment into the car..

For camera duties on the mount i chose a Flip Ultra HD cam:  full HD recording and super simple to use, very light and the new 3rd gen version shoots in 60fps and has image stabilisation, £95 on ebay  :happy2:

And finally mounted in the car  :happy2:

Total cost for the mount was just over £12
