Replacing Cam/Rocker Cover

Featured Replies

Hi,

I need to replace my cam/rocker cover due to cracking the original. I've got a replacement cover and was going to use the same gasket but, having never done anything like this before, i'm after some help and advice if possible please.

Would i be wise to change the gasket??

Do i need to use sealant??

Would i be able to pick something up from Halfords or would i be better going to Skoda??

Any help welcome,

Thanks,

John

Yes, change it. Yes, sealant required. Go to Skoda. :)

Check you FB inbox in a mo ;)

Even though it says sump sealant, would this work??

Wouldn't like to answer that without being 100% sure, but I don't see why not.

cos it's for a 1.4 MPI :D

:D So it is!! :D

I'm sure the cam cover seals are not that expensive, and I didn't think you used any kind of sealant as the rubber is the sealant. :)

The pain is getting to one of the 10mm bolts at the back as from memory the EGR unit gets in the way - not 100% on that.

Going by the Haynes manual and looking around on the net, that seems to suggest using sealant. :(

The Haynes only describes the ASZ and ATD engines, I was going by that info :)

Time for an EGR delete :D

I've posted this in my project thread but will post here as well just in the hope of getting more replies.

Does anyone know how i can get to the bolt on the cam cover that's underneath the EGR??

It looks like i need to remove the EGR to get to it but i'm hoping there is a way to get to it without going down that route, like a special tool or something.

Anyone have any ideas??

Got a pic of its sort of location? So I can see if I can think of a solution for you

Just come across this thread......my cam cover is leaking slightly on my 1.9 TDI PD100. I think the cam cover/gasket is identical to the PD130 in the vRS.

I was having a good look at it yesterday, and as devonutopia says, there is one spline/torx bolt that has very marginal access as the EGR body is in the way. It's possible you could get a bit on an extension bar to just engage with it, but I didn't try so I'm not sure......but it does look tricky.

I'm sure a new rubber gasket is all that is required to stop the leak.....I don't think there would be any need for sealant.

I'll be ordering a new gasket and giving it a go soon.....when the weather gets a bit warmer!

On my old octavia (which was an injection pump diesel, not a PD) one of the bolts at the back of the rocker cover was tricky to get at but I managed it using a socket connected to two universal joints and an extension bar (I still don't know why I have 2 identical universal joints, they aren't part of any socket set I own, but hey they came in useful).

Cheers. I've bought a PD100 cover off Devonutopia, which i'm sure will be fine.

I tried getting an extension bar onto it but it just wouldn't engage with the bolt.

Going by the Haynes manual, it says to use a bit of sealant but not all the way round.

Having managed to change this a few weeks ago (well, my brother did it while i helped) and using the sealant at the points mentioned in the Haynes manual and the Skoda workshop link above, i'm now wondering if the oil escape i had is because of the sealant or because i didn't put sealant all the way around. I know a couple of people have said i don't need to use sealant but i'm just concerned that the only thing then to keep the oil in is the gasket and the hope tightening the bolts will work. Sealant would suggest it will make the gasket stick to rest of the engine but at the same time, if this is the cause of my recent issues, i don't want to use it and have the same happen again.

What do you all think, sealant, yes or no??

The bolt is tucked down there and my ratchet won't reach it.
