Wheel nut keeps spining

Featured Replies

Had a really tight bolt, decided to yank really hard with the old breaker bar, now the bolt keeps spinning : |

Question is, what are the chances of needing a whole new hub or will it be a case having the bolt drilled out and new bolt fitted? If so, how much will it cost for both scenarios? Anybody had any experiences or have any top tips?

Thanks in advance

Be a new hub/bearing if the thread is shot.

You don't say front or rear. Just replaced my front hubs due to bearing failure. Cost was £50 per hub for the parts so probably easier and cheaper just to change the hub as you're going to have to replace the nut and the bearings will obey sod's law and give up the ghost 2 days after you've had an insert fitted.

Sorry forgot to mention its the rear.

Surely need the wheel off to replace the hub?

Oh yes! sorry, didn't realise that the wheel was still on. However if the "nut" part of the bolt spins then surely the wheel will come off leaving a threaded part in the hub? Have I misunderstood? Can you remove the wheel? Please update..

Hi, nope the wheel doesn't come off as the nut keeps spinning. I can turn the nut left and right, bit it's doesn't tighten nor loosen : (

Well it won't come loose then!

Sounds like the captive type nut that holds the threads has came off? - but it's built into the bearing so isn't "really" possible...

It just seems strange for it to spin and nothing happen... Have you taken the other four out and pulled on the wheel to see if it will come off?

Try pulling the wheel hard against it and holding the pressure on while turning it to see if it grips a thread.

You can use a helicoil type insert if a thread has stripped, it's a perfectly good repair and can be done in situ, however you'll still need to get the wheel off. Suggest more brute force may be necessary to remove the bolt. Try punching the wheel bolt out from the back of the hub.
