Grey smoke, lots of it, just on throttle

Featured Replies

I think I am getting diesel coming past the injector seal into the combustion chamber. I cannot prove it, but the symptoms are when I am just using a small amount of throttle - say 10% to 25% I am noticing significant light grey smoke, sometimes coming out in a sort of smoky haze, but with the occasional strong PUFF of smoke, which suggests to me there is combustion going on in my engine that is not wanted and I am basically burning extra fuel and wasting diesel.

Anyone had this before? Simply a case of doing a PD injector seal replacement - something easy a regular garage can do?

Not so familiar on the PD, but when i replaced my injectors for larger nozzles i had this at first, it was because the pop pressures had gone off point, had to get them reset, perfect now

I am thinking also the camshaft could be a candidate.... Going to get the cam cover off asap to inspect.

I asked about this before and you told me not to worry :S exactly the same symptoms.

Could also be the wiring loom to the injectors I suppose, changed one for a guy with an a4 that was misfiring and that cured it.

Good shout - VCDS hook-up first methinks. So one / all the injectors might be playing up in regard to the electrical signal coming from the loom. That's a damned sight easier to change than the injectors themselves....

yes, its a p1ss fart of a job to change, but it is a common problem. Not an expensive part either. The way i see it, it can only be loom, injectors, cam lobes, ecu/map. Loom being the cheapest

I can rule out ecu/map I reckon - or at least rule it out as being a "very highly unlikely"

Aye i doubt theyre at fault.

How old is the CTS? if its 4 pin, the gauge may be fine but the ecu control side of it may be done.

I forgot to put pump in the list too lol. But the loom will be around £30 so a good starting point

The CTS in the fabia is only two pin.

Had a fault for the MAF on VCDS earlier, but I cleared it and it never came back.

Weird thing is my tune is MAP based, and the MAF isn't even in the system anymore. Well odd! Still smoking....

have you ran it maf unplugged? It may be feeding back and interfering........ possibly?

Well, I have been running without the MAF plugged for a while, and its been the same. It seems to smoke less when accelerating gently when cold, but once it is well warm, the smoke starts coming out again on fairly sedate acceleration.

I had the camcover off this morning before work (5 minute job with my EGR :D) and the cam seemed OK, so I have ordered a set of injector seals on the off-chance it is that.

Not sure what the next step would be.

I had this problem when "tweaking" the turbo. Basically as you described, a fair amount of grey / white smoke with VERY little throttle but cleared when pressing on.

Cant remember if it was the stop screw or the actuator, think they the right terms, but with a bit of patience it was cured :)

Could one or the other have come loose, knocked out of sync ?

Well, it shouldn't be linked to the turbo as the symptoms have been present pre-hybrid as well....

I am going to have to go for a longer drive and see what happens. Actually, that reminds me, better screw the camcover back down. haha! :D

If you leave the can cover a bit loose it will make a terrible mess - I did it and thought I had a terminal problem, it covered the back of the block and the gearbox in oil.

Its bolted securely down again now.

Noticed this evening, the car seems to have periods of chucking out smoke on light throttle use, and then it will decide not to. Its definitely inconsistent, so I am now beginning to wonder if there is a dodgy connection on the injector wiring loom. I have had no faults relating to wiring though, Starting to be a little more like a random electrical issue, than something which is mechanical (that you would expect to be a consistent issue)

Well, oddly, since getting a replacement alternator and giving the (flat) battery a good overnight trickle charge, the car's poor cold start and smoke issues appear to have severely diminished. I'm not sure how the running voltage could have this effect, but it seems to have helped. Car has started right on the button the past two mornings. Bit of grey smoke, but no plumes like before. Also not seen the amount of light throttle smoke either.
