Diesel or Petrol....?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I am loving my Diesel burning Octy for the 15months ive been running it.

now, its time to look at trading in the wife's 07 206 petrol.

I'm torn... do i stick with petrol, or go diesel on her car too.

her commute is at most 3 miles each way to work, with the very occasional mid - long distance drive

(i.e. about once a month.)

Any trips we make we take the Octy for the comfort and cruising frugal-ness

so... given the many short, cold engine trips she will be doing, is it worth going diesel?

or is the potential for lower running costs going to be offset by the lack of improved mpg running a cold engine...

Advice please??!!

For 3 miles it doesn't matter both engines wont be upto temp and both suffer poor mpg!

Buy a non turbo petrol due to short trips

Deffinately petrol, runs that short will kill the DPF, the dealer will give you the VAG information on suitability of diesel engines.

Short miles like that with a diesel, the DPF will be borked before you know it.

beat me by seconds :D

Cheers Jase,

I was thinking petrol might be the better option.... looking at some Mk 2 Fabias for her B)

little 1.2 petrol should be more than adequate for those short trips if you've got the Octy for long hauls. Cheap cheap on tax and insurance too

For the very short journeys she does petrol makes more sense. If you do decide to go diesel (you've not said what age car you'll be looking for) I would suggest you avoid anything with a dpf. HTH

Thanks guys :-) its nice to have suspicions proven by others

I used to do that commute in a diesel and even without a dpf it caused problems. I would go for a NA petrol, the simpler the better.

Littleade,

Her car currently is 2007 Peugeot 206, 1.4L... 64bhp...

so id be looking at min 07/08. depending on what i see, and the price i can get!

If i did end up getting something pretty new, with a DPF,

am i right in saying that a once a month thrash should help keep the DPF unclogged?

Maybe; maybe not. It depends on how she drives it every day.

A petrol really would have been a better option IMO. A diesel probably won't budge from stone cold in 3 miles which causes all sorts of trouble

Yeah forget the diesel with a dpf idea!

In the midst of winter it wont even budge from stone cold over that mileage!

I would write that off completly!

Get a honda petrol! Will last a lifetime of 3mile journeys

Nae bother.. Petrol burning it is!

now... to the classifieds :-)

3 cylinder Fabia mk2. For 3 miles that would be perfect.....

Yep and they are fairly decent to drive too.

I was given one when my Octy was in for a warranty paint job. Acceleration was nothing great, but it sounded and felt nippy in town. I was going to say it would be cheaper to service as it used less spark plugs, but I guess they come in packs of 4, so it might be a while before the savings were realised (at service no 4 when you have 4 free spark plugs sitting in the garage ready to use).

My father has a 6 valve one which was bought new in 2010 and now has 2600km on it. It's ideal for that.

No the acceleration isn't great but its not bad around town and does 80 on the motorway without strain. I quite like it

Yeah...diesels take a few miles to warm up. I find in the midst of winter my TDI doesn't really get warm on 30mph limits for a good 10+ minutes.

Oh and remember, you won't have warm air in the diesel in winter for the whole journey! The petrol should give you some warmth in the cabin sooner.

Plus the 3 cyls have that scaled down Merlin sound to them too. I purposely double de-clutch the one at work all the time :D

Right,

the hunt has begun for the missus' new PETROL motor,

given i know she doesnt want/need anything too big,

but comfortable for the odd long haul or motor way punt,

I want to get her away from French cars,

(mostly cos i hate the gearbox/clutches in all of them..)

so... reviews on a couple of possibilities, if possible?

2008/9 Suzuki Swift - 1.3l

2008/9 Mitsubishi Colt - 1.3l

08/09 Mazda 2 - 1.2l

I have to be honest about the Fabia/Ibiza/Polo -

i had a 1.2 Cordoba and the engine went bang... Kinda put me off that particular engine :wonder:

or if theres something ive not thought of?

thanks guys,

3 miles? Get her a decent bike :giggle:

How about a bike. Or walk!

Was just about to suggest a bike. 3 miles could be done in 20 mins.
