Smart light

Featured Replies

How does it work in the real world guys? Both systems. The one that automatically dips the headlights and the other one that adjusts the beam patterns dependent upon where you are driving.

For example if you are on the motorway with the main beams on, will it dip in time not to blind oncoming traffic or cars in front that are a good few hundred metres up the road?

Cheers.

I have the Dynamic assist which adjusts the beam to put shadow around oncoming cars.

It reacts fairly quickly when it detects an oncoming car - I can see the changes to the cone of light as it makes the adjustments. It works well on motorways and relatively straight stretches of road. It is quite impressive being able to keep the high beams on and never having to manually dip them. It must work pretty effecively for oncoming drivers because I have only received a warning flash once in the past 3 weeks.

I found a bit of a problem on windier roads becuase other drivers see your lights around the bend, and expect you to dip in advance. The adjustment only begins once the system detects the oncoming headlight. The driver is in the high beam for a second or two. I tend not to use the Dynamic assist on windy back roads because of that...

The light assist simply switches the main beam on/off. It works well but you do need to be aware on left hand bends sometimes when, as said above, it can be a bit later than perhaps you would dip. The AFS is the crucial thing for good forward lighting and works well in adjusting light patterns. So I always drive in auto and let the system do its thing. Very occassionally override if I think it hasn't dipped in time.

I had another thread where I questioned how smart assist works. I came to the conclusion that the only real difference is that it modifies the main beam (rather than switching to dipped beam) thus allowing some elements of main beam to remain illuminated in front of the car.

The other key difference is that with light assist you do not get the extra LED strips in the headlamps.

Found this in the press launch pack. It gives the best description of the difference I have come acroos. Shame Skoda didnt put it in the brochures!

"The automatic use of high beam is controlled by the optional Light Assist. This system is available in two versions for the new ŠKODA Superb: as the standard Light Assist and as the enhanced top version Smart Light Assist. The latter, also called masked high beam, is a first for a ŠKODA model.

Smart Light Assist provides improved safety through optimum illumination in all traffic situations. The system includes dynamic angle adjustment and masked high beam.

The multi-function camera recognises oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead in darkness and Smart Light Assist automatically dips the beam specifically in these areas. Instead of automatically switching high beam off, the new technology is selective. This means, it is always possible to drive with high beam and take advantage of its long reach without dazzling other drivers or oncoming vehicles.

The system works by relaying the light sources recognised by the camera to the control unit which, based on this information, calculates the required headlight steering signals.

A cylinder, which is integrated into the central module of the headlights, controls the light distribution depending on the situation. If necessary, a ‘mask’ is projected onto the road in the area of the vehicle ahead or of oncoming vehicles. Full light intensity and maximum reach of the beam are maintained around the masked areas."

the SE business is listed as having "light assist" but it doesn't have this auto dip/main beam functionality. Just the coming home functionality.

I ordered my car with  Smart Light assist  but I am not sure it is working

Here is the screen for turning it on but there is no option for it.

The two small aluminium boxes are present under the bonnet.

When it adjusts the beam it is a sudden cutoff to low beam, I was expecting a more gradual change as on my old E series which had a similar function.

Light assistant provides these functions:

- Leaving home: Turns on the lights after unlocking the vehicle for easier finding of the convenient path to the car.
- Coming home: If the light intensity outside is lower than a set level, this function provides pleasant illuminating of the path home.
- Tunnel light: While driving, this function activates headlamps if the intensity of the outside lights abruptly decreases.
- Day light: Turns the daytime running lights on after turning the ignition on.
Also integrated into the Light assistant system is the Rain lights function, which turns the lights on when the wipers are activated.

Your thinking of Intelligent Light Assistant... which alerts the beam etc..- which do require the xenons

This assistant automatically controls use of the high beams. From a speed of 60 km/h on and in sufficient darkness, it automatically turns on the high beam. When closing in on a vehicle ahead (or in the case of an oncoming vehicle), the system automatically dims the headlights in order not to dazzle other road users. octavia-assistants-light-assistant.jpg

It does look like it's missing the Smart Light Assist. Here's my screen with the option available (Dynamic Light Assist).

I believe those small boxes you refer to are standard with Bi-Xenon lights and are for the AFS, and yes, the light is a gradual switch to main beam but a quick change (or masking) to dipped beam.

Note to self: Don't use paper tissues to clean the screen!

Ok thanks, well I paid for them they are on the original invoice!

Have to get back to the dealers to see what can be done.

Looks like you have the same issue as one or two of us re this matter. You dont have 'smart assist' and it cannot be retrofitted. See my posts on oher threads. Seems some L&K have been supplied without it. Whether due to errors by dealers with their order codes (most likely it would seem) or factory errors who knows.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. You still have a damn good lighting package though so it isn't all doom and gloom.

Yea lights are good but I wanted the best and also you don't get the extra LED strips in the lamps, which I now realise I have not got.

I have paid the £100 for the option so expect to get that back, anyone else had a refund?

Yes, same on an L&K. £100 back and a nice hamper to say sorry. Still not clear if garage or Skoda fault, but no point stressing further.

Dealer called me today to say there was not much they can now do, car has been built without the smart light assist and that's that. They will refund my £100 plus £150 for goodwill.

Happy with that but would have preferred the correct lights!

Hi

I have a 150 Se Business Combi on order and have a question related to the lights, I notice on one of the photos of the Sat Nav Screen it has an option in the lights settings for Travel Mode - Left hand  traffic. Does this mean that as standard you can switch light for driving abroad and not need beam benders?

Thanks

Yes,  just switch it to right hand traffic

Not on the SE Business as standard unfortunately as this has halogen headlights, unless of course you've specced xenons?
